I'm looking to purchase a new GPU and I haven't built a computer in almost 5 years now, possibly more. I have 3 23" inch monitors that I'll be using for the setup. I'll mostly be playing LoL, SC2 and Battlefield at 1080p resolution and streaming at 420 I think.

I was thinking about grabbing a 7850, but could I go for a lesser card or something for like 100 dollars and Crossfire it for better performance?

Streaming doesn't really have anything to do with your gpu. Programs like Xsplit rely pretty much entirely on your cpu and ram. Whats the specs of your computer?

Depends on your CPU/motherboard/PSU. Crossfire is a real pain at times, I only recommend it when you have so much real estate to drive it is absolutely necessary. Since you aren't going the Eyefinity route a 7850 isn't a bad idea although personally I'd go 7950 just to give me some future-proofing in performance. You could change your mind about Eyefinity or pick up a huge game with more eyecandy than grunt later that would kill a 7850. That goes doubly for the VRAM as that could be a limiting factor should you go Eyefinity.

i think the short answer is no, considering the hassle and possible fail points u'll have. and also a couple gpus at 100 each, might get u a very solid/modern single gpu for a little extra. if u consider 3 gpus at 100, u can DEFINITELY get modern/present day but used, gpu for sure.

like im pretty much have the setup u are saying, and run it off of one evga gtx 670 sc 2gb.
it is not suggested for a surround view set-up, but i've had no issues once i've fine tuned my set-up.
on less intenseive games like LOL and SC2 no prob running ultra settings, especially cuz SC2 doesnt accomdate gamers for the surround view option. but for games like BF3 and Farcry3, water cool, and cool it well and 0 issues should arise. mind u i say should. haha.

if i had gone for the 4gb tho, im prety sure i would be able to run atleast V-sync and AA on high, not ultra, on surround view at the highest resolution. might drop at some points to like 15-20 fps.
this is all speculation but the former is based on my current set-up and experience to present day.
p.s. i run 4 monitors off my 670, the 4th is jus an accessory where i stream tv shows n such.

A 2gb 7850 would fit the bill, you can get one on eBay for 120ish-150ish

Thanks for all the replies guys, its been really insightful. For lloose, I'm working to build the computer from the ground up, so I don't really have specs. The thought was i5 3570K, 7850 2 GB, 8 GB Ram, dedicated streaming card and 60 GB SSD for boot and most used apps.

A 7850 will be fine playing on one monitor at 1080p. You will need to turn down the settings for some current games (Crysis 3, Metro, Tomb Raider) and definitely for future games but it will get the job done.
