Budget File Server Solution?

Hey Guys,

I have a client that needs a budget file server for his work. 2x 750GB/1TB drives in Raid 1 will be enough. However, I need a solution that has good file permissions. For example, he wants the secretary to only access certain folders or read-only for other folders.

The solutions I have looked at like the Linksys NAS, are utter trash when it comes to permissions. Any suggestions?

I know one can easily do this with Windows 2003 Server, but his max budget is $500-550, including the drives. I have also been looking at those Atom Barebones but hoping for a streamlined NAS kit.

Based on 2003 so you can use the file permisions the same if you dont want to use the storage pool sharing.

Agreed. I use the file permissions and the storage pool at the same time. I don't like WHS locked in file permissions but the beauty of it is that you can use the standard file permissions and override WHS.

The standard WHS permissions would be more than enough for most people, but you have the flexibility of both.

Great. Been reading up on the HP and loving it. Hopefully I can find one without a HD and put in 2x WD 1TB's.

The Acer is also really good and i know just recently they had a deal where it came with an extra 1tb for the same price.
