Friend wants me to build him a decent machine for under $800. How does this look?

Go AMD 754 instead, and get him a 3000+, the DFI Lan Party UT is the board to get. Also go with the seagate 80gb HD not the WD, seagates are just more reliable. It is $65 on ZZF shipped. Maybe sell the psu that comes with the case and get him a more reliable one? Just my thoughts.

If he's a gamer, he'll be wanting a 6600GT in there, rather than the plain 6600. Should be about $220 AGP, but is a class above the 6600.

And as above - AMD64 is both cheaper and faster than the Intel equivalent. For games, that is.

i'd go intel, personally. a low-cost matx board + a good p4 s478 (which will be around a while yet) will go places indeed.

and i'd go for a radeon 97** or 9800 vanilla.

6600GT preforms better ignore this newb intel blows for its gameing preformence, is expensive and they want to leave the 478 behind. go with the amd and 6600gt if you can
 
I have to agree with the above: for games, an AMD64 3000+ with 6600GT will be noticeably faster than a 3Ghz Pentium with a 9800Pro. In some cases the AMD will destroy the Pentium system.

It's not like the AMDs are shite for multimedia either.
 
Intel and buget shouldn't be in the same sentence, I'm using the regular X dreamer (not the X dreamer II) It's the same but without the light-up screw/cylinder thingies on the front. The PSU works great. It OCs like a champ, voltage fluxes plus or minus .01 volts, never more than that.. I'd personally get Chaintech's nforce3 with a 3000+ winchester. That board's pretty good for overclocking and with any kind of heatsink that a budget system will have, that board will do all the overclocking you're capable of anyways, and it's about $30-40 cheaper than the DFI. You should definately go with the 6600GT, a 9800 pro has trouble keeping up with it, it would easily walk all over a regular 9800.
