systemboard - supermicro x9scl+-f
hba/raid - ibm m1015
memory - kingston KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G (8gb ddr3 (4x2) ecc)






have been reading the forums for a while and i am trying to decide on what components to choose for my budget build.

i was thinking to go with amd because the consumer boards support ecc however i am having a hard time finding a board with a intel nic (id rather not have to buy pci express nic and just pay for a bit more for a board with one integrated). i have no issues going with intel if the price is right. also i believe the m1015 is an x8 slot so having multiple x8 or x16 slots is a benefit so i could reuse the same board to expand capacity at a later date. if i can find a systemboard that has 6x sata ports then all the better but i will not use the onboard if it doesnt make sense to - possibly just use one or two for the boot drive

also i have just picked up the ibm m1015 as is suggested here many times.

i already have a case which while no the best for such a solution i am going to use to save money and possibly upgrade it later on when i need to expand.

i have noticed some supermicro boards support ip kvm - is this as simple as it sounds? i presume i would install some sort of software on my computer and be able to access the server / nas as if i was directly connected?

this server/nas is strictly going to be used for storage. i am not concerned about any other functionality except storing data, accessing data, streaming data.

if you need any other questions answered please let me know.
