I have recently been looking into building my own computer over the next year piece by piece (i.e. buy a case this month, PSU next month, Vid card next, etc.) and have seen some things refer to BTX. What is BTX??? Is it something I should think about when I buy my case (I plan on keeping the case I want to buy, Lian Li 65, for a LONG time)??? What are the latest estimates for BTX to be common (I know, its hard to predict the future, but just what the theory is now is helpful)???

Over the next five years
 
So far it's pretty much just an Intel thing. AMD doesn't like it since the physical specs put the ram slots too far from the proc for thier integrated memory controller setup. It's likely that we'll see a split in the market w/ Intel systems going to BTX and AMD either staying ATX or going to something else. Another possibility is AMD boards being BTX case compatible but viloating the board layout requirements.
Personally I'd like to see a new spec requiring space for 10+ slots. I've got all 6 on my mobo filled & could easily use up 2-3 more w/ firewire, USB 2.0, and gigabit ether. (Athlon MP board, no onboard USB 2.0)

its a kind of design... like the sequel of ATX... however, i would NOT buy piece by piece of the computer... might as well save up that money every month and buy it in the end which will be cheaper because technological advances causes prices to drop and you could probably buy a motherboard now for 80 and buy the same for like 50 two months later... save the money and buy it altogether in the end... its also not safe because you may not realize its broken til you put it together several months later right after it ran out of warranty

Thanks everyone! I get the feeling that I shouldnt worry too much then.

By the way, I plan on moving everything in my sig into the new case with the new power source. Then I want to upgrade the vid card (waiting to see what the 512mb versions of these cards can do or for the prices to come down), then I was going to save for the memory, MB, proc and buy theses at the same time (maybe even a PCIe vid card if I have saved enough).
 
You can get some cases that are ATX and BTX compatible, however these cases will make you pay a nice chunk of change.

Pretty much what i was going to say. Having parts laying around for 6 months is not the way to go.

There are not going to be 512mb versions for some time. GDDR3 is on short supply, and VERY pricy.
