BSOD error on 5870 driver upgrade

I have just put together a new computer (specs below), but am having a rather odd difficulty about which I have not been able to find information via a Google search: whenever I try to update my graphics card drivers, I get a BSOD error making reference to atikmpag.sys. The graphics drivers that came on the CD with the card work, but they have a date sometime in 2009. Installing the drivers either using the setup executable downloaded from the ATI site (the Catalyst Control Centre installation package) or using the built-in "update driver" function in device manager results in a BSOD part-way through the upgrade process. When the system reboots, the backup VGA drivers are loaded and Device Manager reports that there is an error with the driver for the graphics card, although gives the correct date for it (25th of November 2010). This error happens consistently. Rolling back the driver to that with a version 8.660.0 (8th of September 2009) allows the system to work again, but with the out of date graphics driver.

The specifications are:

Intel i7 950 @ 4.11Ghz
GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard
6Gb RAM (triple channel kit, 3x 2GB)
Windows 7 64-bit
PowerColor PCS+ Radeon HD5780

Any help would be much appreciated!
 
Have you tried completely uninstalling the old driver before trying the new one?
 
Not very helpful, but sometimes driver bugs just aren't fixable without a fresh OS install :/ Apart from that not sure, can try something like driversweaper/Ccleaner but I tend not to find those programs useful.
 
try the 2009 drivers, if they work then move on. Or try a slightly older driver.
 
What does seem to have worked is installing a slightly earlier driver (October 2010) via Windows Update. It may be that there is some specific problem with the November driver. Very odd.
 
What other software is on the pc e.g. spyware doctor, antivirus software, cc cleaner, you had spyware at some point,some weird pc pit stop software, etc. there is always a software explanation for why a new driver won't work but an old one will. It's definitely not the driver because if it were then everyone would be having issues.
 
Corrupt driver install or UAC making issues again with drivers not installed as administrator are my guesses. :)

Following is a good way to jiggle this loose:

uninstall all ati software with the uninstaller found in control panel -> add remove programs
Don't restart yet
go to system -> device manager and install manually the GPU drivers as standard VGA drivers (it will avoid any install of gfx drivers upon reboot and also make install easier)
restart
rightlick on the ATI drivers you wish to install and choose run as administrator.
Install as instructed
restart
done
