Brutal load temps

Well, the watercooling system is finally up and running. My PolarFlo TT is keeping mt Opty 146 idling at 38, but as soon as I start priming, my temps shoot up to ~68! The CPU goes back to 38-39 within seconds of stopping the test. Is this a by-product of Arctic Silver 5's "setting" period, or is there something seriously wrong here?

AS5 on everything

I don't think it's the pump or the rad at fault, my GPU never went above 40 even when severely overvolted.
 
How about getting us a pic? Borrow somebody's camera... BTW, I have been following your posts and I am curious as to where you got that SilverProp Fusion cooler in less than 24 hours? I'm all ears so I can recommend others where to go. Weren't we talking yesterday that you had a 7800 card that you wanted to cool?
 
have you checked to see if the waterblock is making good contact with the CPU?

lift the block up and see if the small dab of AS5 has been squished into a big, round area on both block and IHS.

there is no way in hell that you temps should be as high as you are reporting, either at idle or load.

have you plumbed up all of your watercooling gear in series? T-line right before the pump? worked all of the air out of the loop? tightened down the retention springs until they are squished down to AT LEAST half of their original length?

AS5 setup time will change things a few degrees, however you are still way higher than you should be.

Anyhow, I don't think I'd want to post pics even if I could; the case I'm using really is too small for a 12" heatercore, I have wires everywhere!

Steeeeve: Both the bios and the ICT (?) Guardian program from DFI's website report the same.

checking that the thermal compound has been spread out as i described above is one way of checking for good contact. that's why i described what should have happend to the thermal compound if the block is making good contact.

yes, yes you should. that's one of the quickest and easiest thing to verify, if your temps are unexpectedly high.

normally you put springs between the nuts and the block, and tighten the nuts down to compress the springs, and then the springs push down the block as firmly as it should be pushed. it just means that you can be sure that you are applying about the correct amount of pressure to the chip, through the block.

some people don't like to use the springs, claiming that there is no way to know if the block is really being pushed down firmly enough. that blocks previous owner might have been one of them.

since you don't have springs, i guess that i would take off the block, clean everything up with 99% purity iso alcohol and lint free wipes (paper coffee filters work if you don't have proper wipes. do not use kleenex, toilet paper, cotton swabs etc: they are not lint free), put a small dab of AS5 on the center of the spreader, put the block on there and tighten down the nuts until the block is firmly held against the proc.

fire the comp up, check your temps. if the the temps are still in the high 30s at idle, tighten both nuts a half turn or so and see if that helps temps. if it does help, tighten down those nuts a bit at a time until your idle temps are in the low 30s.

if tightening the nuts a half turn doesn't help, maybe try just a little bit tighter to see if that makes a difference, but give up if it doesn't help quickly, since there is a danger of overtightening things and crushing your core.

in the long term, i think that you should go out and get yourself some springs......

as for the T-line: it's not likely to make a huge difference, but it really is supposed to be immediately before the pump intake, to make sure that the pump is fed a smooth stream of water, reducing noise and helping performance.

That sounds exactly like what I did :(

This is my second mount so far- the first one I used too much AS5, I figured that was the problem. I guess it's going to have to be springs for me.
 
Sure sounds like a bad mount. I here the Silverprop is very restrictive. If it is it may well be a bad combination to run with the Polarflow, it demands high flow for best results...
 
I hope you problem is solved by re-seating the block, or something else simple, but if it isn't, consider my story. I had horrible temps (38-40*C idle, 55-60+ *C load) on my cpu after my first water build (see sig). I tried a lot of things, multiple re-seatings, altered attatchment hardware, overkill rad and fans, but ultimately it was solved by frustration, a few gin 'n tonics, and a razorblade (not what you think). Apparently the IHS on my 3200 venice was less than flat. After removal temps were much improved (26*C idle, 36*C load). The removal process was simple and took 5 minutes, although I have to admit, I may not have tried it without the help of my friend Gordon, from London. Cheers!

How true. Owned three a64's all had serious temp drops when removing ihs...
 
I actually thought long and hard about removing the IHS, but I've heard too many reports of mysterious faliures to be comfortable running naked- especially since rumour has it that S939 Opterons have been discontinued :eek:.

The best part is, it looks like it won't be necessary. I grabbed a couple of springs that I had lying about, and I'm now priming at 43 :D

It's not the greatest, since these springs aren't exactly strong (One's from a closet door, the other I have never seen before), but it's good enough to tide me over 'till the next time I hit a home improvement store.
