Alright... so I live in South Carolina but I'm currently going to college at Caltech... in Pasadena, California. Love my computer, can't live without it. I shipped it from SC to CA... and when it arrived, I was all excited. Much to my dismay and horror... the entire motherboard was detached from the case. The screws popped right out. My videocards and soundcard were thrown off the motherboard (how the hell did that PCI-E clip not stop that...)... and some metal was bent on all 3 cards (fortunately not anything important). I had to rebuild my computer. I finally got it to work... but only with 1 videocard. My other one is dead. The fan won't start up... nothing. :(

I'm just hoping I get some kind of compensation from the post office. Upon shipping the computer, I did PAY for insurance... Has anyone had something like this happen? What happened in the end? Did you get your money back?

For someone going to caltech, you aren't too bright. This is not the appropriate forum, also, we are not the postal office, so we cannot say what will happen, this is why you take it up with the shipping carrier yourself. :p

your mounting screws into the case all popped out? All 12? And you blame the shipper? This is definitly your fault, or at LEAST the fault of the case since some of those plates dont thread well, in which case you would of noticed when you built it and SHOULD of taken the proper precautions. I know if i tried to pull my motherboard out without taking the mounting screws out i'd end up picking the case up by it so your story sounds like a wash that it just all randomly fell out and now its their fault.

I know the screws are tight. What kind of force would it take to completely dislodge those videocards and soundcard from the motherboard? What else could I have done save shipped my computer piece by piece?? The videocards and soundcard were completely just ripped off the motherboard from the looks of the bent parts.

Well it's a broken VC... didn't really see a better forum. Yea I know you're not the post office. So what? Wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with broken hardware through shipping.

Jeez give the guy a break, his system's shot and you guys decide to jump on him

Look, you might be able to claim it but I would imagine that you would have to prove that it was properly packed and that they somehow mistreated the package. Does the box show any damage?

It's a big company and I'm sure they deal with claims all the time. Try it and they might just say ok.

no no, im not questioning what popped the mounting screws of the cards, im questioning how all 12 motherboard screws randomly failed. you'd have to drop it from a huge height to cause enough trauma to do that.

Just sounds totally bizarr. You go to the post office, tell them what happened they'll give you a claim sheet to fill out, i think it takes a month or something for review, and if you insured the whole thing you have to treat it as if the whole computer is a loss. You cant say you insurred it for 1000 or what ever, but you only need 300 for a new card they'll look at you wierd. So tell them it was shipped busted, which is true because it can no longer perform the same operation it did before it left your hands, and they'll review it from there. You may need to bring the whole computer back in and explain, but like i said, you cant just say the card is broke, treat it as if the whole PC is broke, will cause less headaches.

I had the same problem with ups. I moved from california to florida and shipped my comp thru office depot and paid for the insurance. I had recieved the computer with my video card totally distroyed. The case was bent and they knocked off my nb fan which really made me mad. I reported it and they sent a lady to take pictures of my computer and shipping material which was more then enough for my package (had the lady at office depot inspect my package and after she ok'ed everything i had her put more peanuts on the sides of the case). Well after that office depot never called us ups never called us and i ended up with a broken brand new video card that will not be replaced. I have tried to get in contact with ups and they just give me the run around, same with office depot. So basically you paid for the insurance but are not going to get it in my experience

Well it looked like the thing was just tossed around... the metal was just mutilated. Yea it does seem like a big hastle. Not sure what I'm going to do... not like I have a car or anything on campus. I'm going to try anything and everything to get that videocard to work.

That's why I never ship a computr via USPS. They just don't care.

I live 30 miles from San Jose and it takes a week to send a letter there. They lose stuff all the time, send it to the wrong addresses. Why should they care? They're run by the government. It's not like they'll go out of business if they do a shitty job.

Yeah, I work at a Pack & Ship store that uses UPS, USPS, FEDEX, and DHL.... UPS is by far the worst with packages but we have had a fair amount of insurance claims with USPS. The could give a shit about whats in the package. They treat it like a hot potato and toss it around.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone had sex on top of your computer box!

Did you notice this before accepting the package? If not, did you file a claim with UPS? I have had several issues like this and positive results both ways.

If it is broken and you know it when you are receiving it, just refuse it next time and call their Insurance people.

same thing happened to me, more or less. They really fked up my computer, Only thing broken was my video card, though, besides my completely bent case. Insurance guy came out, they said "insufficient packaging", though it was packed in the stock case box, with the propper styrafoam packaging, plus more packaging besides, and I was not reimbursed.
I had insurance on it too.
I wouldn't count on it.
