broken pins on Intel 3Ghz

I have a 3Ghz P4 chip that a buddy of mine gave me. He couldn't figure out why it didn't work and when I took a look at it I noticed the bottom of it has ~10 broken/bent pins. Is there anyway to repair or fix it? I don't really have any warranty information because it has changed hands around 3x now. Do you think I could send it back to Intel? Basically I just want something to do with it rather than let it collect dust or get thrown away.

if u still have the box with serial #'s and etc. i think u can call Intel up and they'll send u a replacement after u return the broken CPU w/ retail box & HSF to them. According to Intel it can't be fix (or not worth it).

it can be fixed. check www.motherboardrepair.com.

Other people have had excellent luck with this guy. He does awsome work and not too bad a price either.

I know bent pins are failry easy to fix (just use a knife or some fine point object to make them straight.

As for broken pins...I'm not sure what they guy does at www.motherboardrepair.com to fix that problem, but to my knowledge broken pins are a lost cause.

As long as you have the serial number on the top of the CPU, Intel should replace it for you as long as it's under warranty.

There are a couple bent pins but a few that are definetly broken.

I do not have the orginal box and after checking Intel's site it doesn't look like they'll honor any type of warranty. Has anyone actually tried to RMA somethign with Intel without all the official documentation?

I will probably give the guy at MotherBoardRepair.com a try, for ~$35 it is probably worth seeing if he can do anything for me. I sent him an email.

Thanks for your help!

I had a Intel 3.0 that had broken pins about a week or so ago. I was thinking about sending it to Intel. I called them up and they said that they would take a look at it. If they think it was an accident then they'll honor it by fixing it, replacing it, or refunding it at the current value. I didn't feel like wasting money on shipping. So i just ordered one from newegg. Give it a try, maybe you'll get lucky.

i had bent pins on my proc,, i use extra sharp pliars to bend them back and it worked fine.. im just scared of buying the 925's and bending it on there since they are smaller and more fragile now :(

Ironic isn't it :)... the pins on these are on MB now... You will be scared to buy too expensive MOBO. :) (and much more painful to replace)

You want intel to warranty a chip with 10 broken pins?? funny. Even if you could RMA it that is just like stealing because you messed it up. Just as bad as when people volt mod their hardware, then take off the volt mods after they kill it to RMA it. Then my next MB or vid card costs me more down the road!!!

Tedinde - Uhm, I'm not trying to rip off Intel. You figure this thing costs ~$250 retail and I'm supposed to throw it in the trash because of a couple bent pins? There has to be a better way and it would seem like Intel would be the guys who could fix it.

Tedinde - Sposh -

look at the difference in your Sigs. Tedinde obviously has more than enough money to spend on his hobby judging from the 3.2, Vapochill, etc...
Sposh has less "glamorous" equipment in his sig.

There's obviously a difference in thinking that goes with that as well. If everyone would simply step into someone elses shoes for a minute before blasting the flamethrower people wouldn't get pissed as much.

Here's the way I see the two arguments...Sposh is trying to save the full price on the cpu by getting it repaired if possible. If Intel is willing to do this, then it's Intel's call...not anyone elses. Tedinde obviously doesn't give a rip...he'll just go buy a replacement and use the busted one for a keychain or christmas ornament.

He's asking for options, not flames.

try to RMA it to intel. if they take it, well lets say that intel makes enough profit off their CPUs that they could send you a dozen and still be pluggin you in the ass.

most likey they wont take it back. When you RMA something to intel, you actually RMA it back to the person who sold it to you. Most of the time, they dont take anything that has been physically damaged, but there are exceptions.

Heh, one story on Moscow life...
My 1.4 t-bird's MMX lobe fried somehow, I had a thread somewhere, but yeah, I ordered a 2200+ here in MOscow Russia for about $66...
They shipped it in plastic foam wrapped in a rubber band that could cut off the circulation to your pinky finger... Bent about 4 pins on the corner of the CPU
Mad as hell, my hands were trembling, but I decided to give it a go and start bending them back.
Took a toothpic and carefully bent each pin back, using eye to angle it correctly according to the other pins.
It worked, but if you plan to do this, always check VERY LIGHTLY that your pins are straight by holding the CPU over the socket and lightly dipping it into the holes, making sure you feel no resistance.
Plus, be careful not to touch the pins... and be calm.
But you say there are broken pins? as in... they aren't there, or chopped off or somethign? or bent all the way down to the ceramic? (or whatever the hell that crap is that holds the pins)
Crazy, dude... how sad.

Yeah broken as in they aren't there. Basically a coworker of mine who has tourette's syndrome tried to put together a computer. Unfortunately his motherboard didn't support the 800Mhz bus and he couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. He kept taking out the CPU and reseeding it, but CPUs aren't made to handle that kind of abuse.

I sent it to the motherboardrepair.com guy today so we'll see how it goes. If he can fix this he has my full support :)

Not quite sure what that was all about there...but I didn't bother to read it a second time either...just watched over 4 hours of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and am still stuck on it....might just go watch it again.... :)

anyway, he's not taking the "cheap" way or "poor mans" way out. he said he sent it off to be repaired at www.motherboardrepair.com. I commend him for doing such also, since the other statement someone else made is true in that it will help keep prices down - to a point (I however honestly don't think it'll do jack shit since all a company sees is profit. reducing invalid warranty returns will make their bottom line look better but in most cases this improvement is not reflected in the price a consumer pays for the product. But if invalid warranty returns is costing them money...well then...that's a whole other story there. The price of losses are passed on to the consumer...gains are passed on to the CEO and board members.)

I'll stop here while I'm making no sense. Flame away :) I'm going to bed.

I didn't pay anything for it. The only reason I brought it up was because my coworkers were inches away from tossing it in the trash. That seemed like a tremendous waste to me so I asked my buddies at HardOCP if there was another way. I don't know how this spiraled out of control and became a money issue. That was never my intent :)

because you mentioned Intel and warranty in the same sentence so someone just jumped all over it.
