Broke my VM

I'm running ESX 4.1. I have a 2003 Server VM that I wanted to combine the two hard drive partition on the system drive. So what I did was power down teh VM. remove the virtual drive from it, then added the drive to another 2003 server VM. I combined the partitions in that machine, then removed the virtual drive from it then added it back to its original machine. After trying to boot that VM i get this error :

Reason: Failed to lock the file.
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4e991a48-ff05a6e6-4f5c-001b21c3fcae/FANG-LITTERBOX/FANG-LITTERBOX.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Did I do something wrong?
 
Does that file exist? Look in the VMDK file and see if it's pointing to another file you don't have or renamed.
 
look at the vmx file too - did you have snapshots on that disk?

check the one you added it to second - did you leave ito n there by accident?
 
Sorry in advance since my post will not help your current situation. I have two questions.

1) Why did you partition a virtual hard drive?
2) Would you have been able to achieve your goal easier by instead booting the VM into a Ubuntu live CD and running gparted?
 
Sorry I'm quite new to ESX. I don't have any snapshots i dont think. I don't even know what a snapshot is.
Yes I removed the drive from the VM that I did the partiton merge and put it back in on its rightful VM.

I'm pretty darn sure the FANG-LITTERBOX/FANG-LITTERBOX.vmdk is the drive that I had temporarily moved to this VM to do the merge.

1. The Drive needed more space than I had previously thought it was never going to need.
2. now that you mention it that probably would of been a little easier. Never thought of that.
 
SOLVED!
Well I edited the file on FANG-SECURITY and removed the section
scsi0:2.fileName = "/vmfs/volumes/4e991a48-ff05a6e6-4f5c-001b21c3fcae/FANG-LITTERBOX/FANG-LITTERBOX.vmdk"

I then powered it down and back up again. Then I went to FANG-LITTERBOX removed the drive and re-added it. Both are humming along fine. Thankyou everyone I learned a few things from this and your input.
