Hello All,

I have a strange problem. I have a decent size network in my house with about 10 systems running. They all work except one that my wife brought home from her work. I can ping all internal systems, log into the firewall, but I can not get it on the Internet. It worked a couple of days ago but stopped working today. It is on a small switch which seems to be working fine. I also have a IP phone connected to the same switch which works fine. The firewall is a Belkin Wireless model but she is hard wired to it. I checked to make sure she was not blocked and I don't see anything in the firewall that would block her. Anybody got any ideas? I have shutdown the system and restarted it multiple times with no luck.

Almost forgot. The subnet mask is the same as the other systems on this network so it is not that.

Just thought of something else. It is not DNS since I have tried to ping with IP numbers, which all failed if outside my network. I have also checked the hosts and networks files and they look fine.

I have a new edition. It seems to work with the ATT Global VPN service and then she can access everything including IE remotely through the VPN. What would cause this? The VPN setup or something?

Check your network for duplicate MAC addresses. One of your other machines could have the same MAC as the network card in the laptop. I've seen this quite a few times and the funny thing is, it can sneak up on people. i.e. work one day and be dodgy or not work at all the next.

I'll take a look at the MAC didn't think of that. The system is her's to use since she is home on disability. She had surgery and her doctor does not want her to go back to work for another week or so. She is using it to remotely log in at work to check email etc. The funny thing is that the VPN works and it seems to see all IP's on my side of the firewall. It just will not go out unless it is through the VPN. It almost seems like the VPN software is causing the problem but I don't know how.

Contact the IT person where she works, they (work) probably have it configured that way for a reason. It's best not to screw with a company issued laptop unless you have permission to do so.
