So work was recycling some stuff and I spied a ML350 G6. I did some wheeling and dealing with the server guy to take this home. :D My buddy grabbed one also.

Here is the link to the specs on HP's website.

It comes with the following:

  • One Xeon E5504
  • No RAM (not yet, still wheeling and dealing to get some)
  • No storage
  • 1 460 watt PSU, but I grabbed two ~760 watt PSUs, hot-swappable and redundant
  • Smart Array P410
  • Drive cages
I am looking to convert this to a Hyper V box, preferably 2012.

I am looking for input on the following:

  • Proc: Maybe upgrade to a Xeon E5520 for hyperthreading? Amazon has a killer deal right now
  • Storage: What kind of drives and what RAID?
  • Memory: If I can't score any at work, what kind?
  • Noise: Quieter HSF/Fans?
Let me know what you guys think.

I thought this thread was going to be about a Mercedes SUV!

Get the E5520 from Ebay for ~$20-25 shipped. Get the cheapest Unbuffered ECC RAM you can. Does is take 2.5" or 3.5" drives? I doubt you will get quieter fans as the fans I think are thermally controlled via the MB BMC. If you did replace them then you might have to get specific ones.

Takes 3.5" drives in hot-swappable bays. I do have the caddys for the drives. I didn't look closely enough to check for 2.5" bays, I'll check after work.
