So yeah, I've bought only Nikkor glass up to now, but now that I'm having a hankering for f2.8 and lower lenses it's becoming a rather expensive idea. the sigma stuff seems dramatically cheaper... thoughts on using generic vs brand name lenses?

I'm specifically looking at the 28-70mm f2.8

Sigma has some excelent lenses, and they also have some crap lenses, then again so does Nikon and Canon. Read reviews on the lenses you're looking at. The best place I've found for that is here.
