Brand new Antec True 480w causing crashing

Hey all...

I'll make this as brief as possible. I recently had issues with my power supply, so I got it replaced through Antec (under warranty). While I was waiting on a replacement, I was using a friend's PS, which is some generic brand, but worked great. Now, I receive the new PS, and I put it in. I got my first lockup in a week, followed by SWG crashing twice in a row. I put the old power supply back, and everything works fine.

How can this be happening? I noticed the same crashing issues before, with the old Antec PS. It's not like we are talking junk gear here, it's a 480W 'True' PS from Antec.

I'd like some advice here. Has anyone else had a problem with this PS?

Maybe it's my other hardware it doesn't like?

Could I have simply just gotten a bad PS?

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks all!

I'm beginning to wonder about Antec PSU's myself.
Had a 300W Antec for about 4 years, added a Radeon 9700 to my box, it couldn't handle it. Wrote it off as just being an old PSU.
Bought a True 430W (only PSU available at B/B at that moment) and it worked fine on my 8KHA+.
Bought my current mobo about a year later, connected one HD with the SATA adapter, one on IDE, with the 9700 connected to the same power lead as the HD's (as I did with my old board).
Would crash as soon as I tried any intensive 3D apps (games).
Switched the 9700 to a different power lead and problem solved.
Not sure if it is because the PSU doesn't put out enough power, or simply because of the additional power drawn by the SATA adapter on that particular lead.
Anyway, if you have your 9700 hooked to the same lead as your HD's, try hooking it up to a different lead. Maybe that will solve the problem.

I think your guys main problem is your trying to hook up far too much shit on one line. Most of the time people deduct that they need a larger Power Supply when in actuality they need a 350-430w PSU max.

Try and split up the hard drives and video cards as much as possible.

Antec makes damn near the best PSU's in the business. Granted Channel Well Technology makes them for them. Other then PC Power and Cooling there are none better IMO. I dont even consider a PC Power and Cooling supply though for the fact they want such a high price premium. There are alot of other good brands like Enermax, Fortron, Sparkle, Enlight, Zalman, Thermaltake, and TTGI but i hold Antec above them all.

Whats the wattage rating for the generic PSU and what is your hardware configuration on the Antec PSU?

I just upgraded recently to the Antec True Power 430W. No complaints here. I got it for my Radeon 9800 :)

550 here and not a glitch. My only complaint is the OCtopus of wires lol. :D

I have an Antec True 330, awesome supply, getting 3.31v, 5.01v, and 11.99v

At the risk of sounding rude (and I apologize), I really wasn't looking for success stories, guys...

I was looking for people with issues with this PS. Since writing this, I haven't had any other issues. Perhaps it was just that period of time that gave me issues? Who knows... I'll update more if I have any more problems.

Its just that Antec makes such a good product, the natural reaction is one of utter surprise. A subsequent and normal reaction to shock (precipitated by your post) is to regurgitate mindlessly our personal experiences with our Antecs.

It is like someone telling you his father beats him. After your intial shock your only response, however in appropriate is "My dad does not beat me"?

So I appoligize to you. :D

Cool, I just was hoping someone else was having issues, other than what we all experience with the "octopus". Man, there has to be a better way to route wires!!! ARGH!

Well, I'll see how the PS performs, and go from there, I guess.

Thanks again everyone!!!

Only problem I have had with Antec is my new 430's fan died 2 months after I got it.

I still get hard lockups. I don't know what the issue is. I am not going to keep RMA'ing the power supply, but this is starting to piss me off. It doesn't happen often, but shouldn't happen at all.

I'm not thrilled with Antec stuff myself. I have a Sonata with a true 380 in it. The case was somewhat difficult to work with while building the system, and every time I move my mouse's scroll wheel the PSU makes some kind of whistling noise. I also bought an Antec Cobra cable at CC that was DOA.

Just a thought.......Try connecting a digital volt ohm ampmeter and check your rails while runnin intensive stuff.

I had a brand new antec trueblue 480 powersupply, and it was bad. By bad i mean when i put my new rig together i noticed all my casefans werent running at full speed, 2 weeks later i come home and none of my case fans are on, games started crashing randomly, so I said WTF, all i was hearing about antec was good and excellent, so why was mine bad? that suxed balls, i guess whever u buy a new powersupply u think im gonna get a good one, i mean its brand new, never been opened, so WTF? So i RMA'd it from newegg, spending 10 days w/o a computer, those were the longest days of my life......
So they send me a new one again, so far its been working for 3 months w/o a problem

I think one of the things to remember and consider is the shear number of Antec PSUs in use. Every PSU manufacturer has bad supplies. It's a fact of mass production. However, if you looked at the ratio of good to bad supplies, Antec would be in the Top 5, if not number 1 when it comes to reliability in the desktop PSU world.

PC power and cooling on the way. I like the new 425 deluxe with everything sleeved and built in serial ATA connectors. I love my Antec True Power but alas I have sold it in order to purchase the PC Power and Cooling unit.
