Hello Hardforums. First off let me thank you in advanced for checking this thread out. I could really use your help.

I have recently built a new gaming rig here are the stats before I go into the bulk of my post.
I have a Core 2 Duo E7400 at 2.8GHz sitting on an MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard. The video is handled by an ATI Radeon X1600 possibly a X1650 video card that I obtained from a friend. I am running 4 gigs of memory though my OS only actually uses 3. I also obtained this memory from a friend it works but I have no further information other then the size though I admit I can probably get the information by pulling it out and reading the labels upon the actual sticks. The OS is running from an 80gig IDE drive I believe its a Western Digital. My storage drive is a 250GB SATA Western Digital drive that only houses files like my music and pictures and the like. The entire build is encases in an Antec 900 case. The power supply is also an Antec and has more then enough juice for the entire rig.

Now on to the good part.

The build went flawlessly. The os installed great and runs quite well. Im using Windows XP however the legitimacy of said OS is unknown as I did go ahead and use a version that I obtained somewhere. I am particularly having a problem in that my PC seems to hate opening programs while playing audio. For example. Ill be listening to some music in FOOBAR2000 and I'll open a program such as Nero Start Smart. The computer will suddenly chunk down to a crawl, the audio will begin to garble and distort liek when we all had crappy cd players with no anti-skip but worse because the music is still playing and just skipping and garbling. After 30-45 second to a minute the machien returns to normal and the program opens. I have tried looking at my settings, uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers. I haven't tried reformatting yet as I usually like to leave that as a last ditch effort.

Do any of you have experience with this? I have never had this happen to me before on any of my builds.

Could you perhaps postulate as to what you think the problem is? Maybe im just overlooking an obvious problem and you may point out something I hadn't thought about yet. I am utterly stumped and have no idea where to go from here.

Thanks for the help guys or for at least reading this.

Run memtest overnight and report results. Then run drive fitness tests on your HDDs, and error scans with HDTune or similar. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers.

Mmmk i dont think its a driver issue as I updated to the latest drivers previously and the problem was still there. Tonight (sunday the 11th) ill go ahead and run memtest over night and give ya the results. Ill look into the hard drive diagnostics you suggested.

Thanks for the help.

Did you use Driver Sweeper when you removed your old drivers? If not, do so, as updating drivers without removing the old ones may leave remnants that could cause problems.

Aha. The P45 / ICH10 has six serial ATA ports but NO parallel IDE ports. According to MSI, the IDE ports are provided by a "JMicron 363 chipset". Looks like they used this chip to provide the two parallel IDE ports.

Sounds like somehow, for some reason, when the IDE controller has to fetch data it brings things down to a crawl. Not sure how it's connected to the south bridge but I'll bet they didn't intend for it to run at high speed; probably more for CD-ROM compatibility and things like that. You probably don't want to hear this, but I'll bet if you had all SATA drives running off the ports on the south bridge, I'll bet you wouldn't have the problem.

You can certainly make sure the motherboard chipset drivers are up to date and installed correctly, that you're running the latest MoBo bios, and that the JMicron chipset has whatever drivers it needs, and is configured correctly.

I ran the memtest as requested above and things went flawlessly.

Blindedbyscience thanks so much for that info. I didnt know nor was told about this. But if the IDE support is being done by some other chip attached to the south it could explain why things slow to a crawl. I will try this this week by installing the OS to just a plain old sata disk and seeing what happens.
