I've been thinking about building my own HTPC using either XMBC or Boxee, but I've been extremely curious about the Boxee Box. I want to set it up in the near future, but I've heard the Box isn't coming out until 2nd quarter 2010. Price is also a factor, and I don't want to spend more than $300 on my HTPC.

What are your opinions? Wait or build it now?

Depends...on what you're trying to do. I have a test PC in office and have Windows 7 Media Center, XMBC, and the new Boxee Beta that just released. I've been an avid user of Windows Media Center but wanted to try some of the newer software front ends that have been recently released. While i've only had a short amount of time with XBMC & the Boxee Beta, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and it really comes down to what you are planning on using your system for.

An HTPC running Windows Media Center or XBMC is highly customizable and gives you plenty of options that a set top box can't provide. The closest i've seen is the newer Popcorn Hour, however, even that has it's limits when compared to a dedicated HTPC.
 
Boxee Box has Tegra 2 which is going to make it extremely powerful and its supposed to be under 200USD and likely closer to 150 USD

The issue is lack of ability to connect cable or OTA tv or sat or just about anything non local or net based.

I will say I am buying it I want a box to watch youtube HD and all those other services with,
 
if hulu works properly on that boxee box it might be worth it. it does not work very well on the pc... if you do get hulu to work you cant even use the on screen controls like fast forward or rewind, because youre in the boxee layer not the hulu webpage. the real problem is hulu doesnt want to be in boxee, but they need to get their head out of their ass imo
 
I've only been playing around (unsuccessfully) with the Boxee beta for a couple days but I think Boxee caters more to online content than being a file browser like Windows Media Center/MediaBrowser, XBMC?(works craptastically on a lower end computer aka. Zino HD), Popcorn Hour.

So I guess (and correct me if I'm wrong) if you have a ton of local content that you like organized into file folders (the file browser on the beta keeps crapping on me) don't get the Boxee.

A prebuilt like a Popcorn Hour and the Popbox may be the best for just OTB file browsing with some online content; I'm giving up on HTPCs cuz' it's too much of a pain trying to figure them out with lower end hardware, since hardware acceleration is all over the place and some frontends have/do not have dxva, some are NVidia biased.. headache after headache. If you have mid-high end hardware though...
