Got myself in the dual core game.... finally. This will be my first dual core. I know, I am behind and a little slow. But money is always tight.

Ordered today. Won't be folding until I get some memory. I think I have a PSU and a cheap graphics card.

As far as I can tell, this mother board does not, or will not, suit anyone well for overclocking. Okay, I can live with that. For now.

Any recommendations for memory?

That motherboard used to be the board to have for overclocking! However, your memory can really hold you back on it. Expect it to hit around a 400MHz FSB, anything beyond that is a gift. IOW, DDR2-800 will suit you well.

But Intel-branded motherboards don't allow overclocking, do they?

Yeah, that's a decent board for overclocking. Intel does their options a little differently, so you'll actually need to go through the manual for the options. Definitely go with DDR2 800 so your ram doesn't hold you back. Is there a reason you went with the original board over the xbx2?
 
Yep, just check out the MB forums. I think Intel finally realized that they were missing out on a big chunk of the enthusiast market. :)

Meh. Out of place in the DC Forum; the OP said his rig would be Folding once he got some RAM. Yours is nice, but it's just like any other Conroe from an FAH perspective. Once the GPU client supports 8800's, you can repost your pic and we'll ooh and aah all day. :)

Now, if you want to trade for my X1900GT, I'll be more than happy to oblige...
 
Just got 5x X1950XTX's Vidio cards.
Ocne the weather stops being freezeing fog here in England, I can upgrade Kanga, Roo, Mole, Rabbit & Owl to GPU folding.
Then Rebuild Tigger and shut Piglet down.
Should be ~25% more KwH for 100% more Points per Day.

But the next day off work will be next year ..... :p
So may take a little while before the full upgrade happens.

Thanks for the info! That is great! I had no idea I could overclock this MB. Thought it was just the cost for getting a stable system.

What is the difference with the version 2 or what ever with this board? What am I missing out on?

The XBX2 has a lot of optimizations for quad-core- both the traces and the power circuitry have been redesigned for cleaner delivery with Kentsfield. I don't know if there are any benefits for dual-core processors.

And from what I've read its supposed to have even more overclocking options that the original.

 
did some research today.

Bad Axe 1 versus Bad Axe 2.

Version 2 is definitely better, but more money because it is new. Too late for me anyway. My version 1 was cheaper than version 2.

I am surprised about being able to OC this thing. I kinda bought it because it was stable, and a good price!
 
Memory for the tightwads among us. DDR2-800 1gig dual channel $99. If you really want to be cheap you can get just one stick and run single channel mode (you only add about about 2% to frame times and you can always add the other 512 meg later) for $54.99.

I use this in all of my machines and it works perfect. Even motherboards known to be picky on memory like it.
