bought a new processor and mobo today.

i bought a p4 550 3.4 processor today. i was looking for upgrading my existing 478 motherboard with a 3.4c but i couldn't find one for less than $400, so i decided on buying a new 775 mobo and cpu.
i have a question, is the p4 3.4 e, the same as, p4 550??

In most cases, you'll also need to buy a new PCIe (PCI Express, not to be confused with regular PCI) video card for your new setup. Your old AGP card will not fit most motherboards that have LGA775 sockets, unless your motherboard is one of the few to use the old i865PE or i875P chipsets or a non-Intel chipset. Motherboards based on the i9## series chipsets and include an AGP slot actually cheat by running that AGP slot directly off of a PCI slot - because the i9## series chipsets don't natively support AGP at all!

By the way, which motherboard did you buy?

Also, the P4 550 is equal to the 3.4E.
 
Which motherboard did you buy? I plan on using the following:

* Abit Fatal1ty AA8XE
* 530J
* 2X256MB Crucial Ballistix 4-4-4-10
 
I myself have the model 550. (3.4GHz Prescott) and I use the D915PBL. For now anyway. I plan on changing motherboards in the near future. I am just waiting for dual PCI-Express slots so that I can do SLi.

My memory is the Corsair XMS 2 ProC4 512x2 1024MB kit. I've not had the system too long, but I've got it overclocked to 3.58GHz and I have my 6800GT at Ultra speeds and so far I'm very happy.

I too am curious as to what motherboard you went with.
 
motherboard is INTEL 915P "ECS" 915P-A (1.0)

it has agp and pcie slots!!

Bleh. Modern AGP cards will not work at their full potential - and may not work correctly - on that motherboard. The i915P chipset does not natively support AGP at all. Thus, ECS, like other "AGP"-equipped i915P mobo makers, actually cheat by running that AGP slot directly off of a regular PCI (not PCIe) slot. As a result, you will get only PCI-bus throughput at best out of that AGP slot - the equivalent of only AGP 0.5x. Furthermore, any AGP card used on that mobo cannot take any advantage at all whatsoever of the AGP features, since the AGP card will be treated like a regular PCI video card. Thus, performance will be degraded.

Exactly right. Also it seems ATi cards hate the AGP Express slots as they are sometimes called. Nvidia cards work in them, but you basically reduce the performance of your 6800GT to slightly above Geforce FX 5200 levels. Which is asstastic.

They actually combine two PCI sockets to get AGP Express. The biggest problem is though, that it doesn't support the AGP features. No fastwrites, no AGP Texturing, and you're limited by bandwidth.

I doubt you will be able to use any of the 6xx series chips with that board and dual core chips are out of the question too.

That's about it. Both of those boards are using the older i865PE/i875P chipsets and do not support DDR2 or PCI-Express.

You can't currently have an AGP slot and PCI-Express and get the full performance of AGP.
 
You will be able to have AGP 8x and PCIe 16x, but only when the 1st boards with the VIA PT880 Pro chipset are launched... this chipset seems to be able to have not only both interfaces, but can also run them simultaneously!
But until then...

I think best bet is to change completely to LGA775 and PCIe 16x...

And why would the OP want to effectively turn a $400 card into a $50~$75 card in terms of overall performance?

Actually, that VIA chipset will support both interfaces. But having both run simultaneously will prove unfeasible - motherboard makers which choose to include both interfaces will disable one when running the other, preventing conflicts (on those upcoming boards, the IRQs and memory allocation resources will be shared - and cannot be unshared, because the sharing will be hard-locked - by both the PCIe and the AGP interfaces, causing conflicts).
 
What's the problem? Ebay your card and get a PCIe card. Problem solved.

AGP expressSavior for backward compatible purpose when users still have the AGP card. ECS patent design (AGP Guardian) ensures 100 % protection to prevent any AGP 8X/ 4X cards burnt out. The higher performance VGA engine card is, the less performance lose on AGP Express slot.
 
That's nice, JVC, but since AGP Express does not support any AGP-specific features and actually runs directly off of the PCI bus (it "steals" two PCI slots), your nice 6800GT AGP will still be substantially slower in performance than it should be. In other words, you'll definitely get low-end graphics performance from a near-top-of-the-line graphics card. As someone has said, your 6800GT on an AGP Express slot will perform slower than an FX 5700NU. And you paid $400 for that 6800GT, whereas the 5700NU sells for less than $100.

what about the pcie slot, will a pcie video card work at full speed and features?

What temps you get? You run it under the stock cooler @3.58? Wow, good job!

EDIT: I have pretty much the same specs except I am using ASUS P5AD2-E. Im also planning on upgrading my vid card to a 6800GT. I'll set up a SLI system eventually but I will probably go with Athlon64. They are gaming better and the whole SLI idea is for gaming isn' it! Well, if you don't want an extra machine, it'd still be nice to do SLI by just swapping the mobo and add one GT.
