Sorry for the silly noob question but I'm just getting around to upgrading my PC after a few years of neglecting it. I purchased a case (Cooler Master RC-922M) with a bottom mount PSU (Antec BP550 Plus 550W) but I want to make sure I'm installing the PSU correctly. The case instructions state the PSU can be mounted either way for optimal thermal performance but I have no idea what's optimal. Do I want the fan on the bottom of the PSU pointing up and blowing the air into the case (I'd assume not as this seems like it would just add heat to the system)? Or, do I mount the PSU with the fan on the bottom and blowing outside the case? I assume the latter is correct but worry because the case is going to be sitting on a carpet floor. The case does have feet that will raise it about a half inch off the floor, but is this enough?
 
The fan on your PSU is most likely sucking air into the PSU, not blowing. Your choices will be to suck air from inside the case near the expansion slot area, or else through the holes in the bottom of your Haf 922.Most people let the PSU suck fresh air from below their case and exhaust that heat out the rear, but there are exceptions. I forget if the Haf 922 has a dust filter on the bottom, but it's something to keep in mind depending on your needs.
 
Nice case... kinda crappy PSU tho, well, for a gaming system at least (would be fine for a basic system, as its name suggests).
 
Thanks for the advice, I feel like an idiot assuming it was expelling air and not an intake. Thanks on the case, granted it's a low end PSU but it's a brand a trust, it's got 3 12v rails, and I'm only using about 350-375w right now. I hate the boring color too, it will be the first item I replace when I do my next rounds of upgrades.
 
Dude, don't sweat sounding like a noob, everyone does it. That's what forums are for, so you can get/share info w/o worrying about what other people think.
 
Well I opted for sucking air fresh air from the bottom of my cm 690 II. However, I didn't put the air filter in. I am pretty anal with the air duster through. I make a habit of dusting the case out every month or so.

Mostly cause it seemed that the hx850 PSU didn't align 100% over the hole on the bottom. Didn't want to kill the airflow even more by using the filter.

I am a noob btw too! o/

Do you have your case sitting on carpet? I'm worried it's not going to get enough air. Maybe I could buy some risers or put something on the carpet, like a piece of tile or some wood (assuming the wife approves).
 
I was thinking about this more today now that I know the fan on top/bottom of the PSU is an intake. Wouldn't it help with the thermal if the PSU was mounted with the fan was pointing up, sucking in the hot air in the case and exhausting it out the rear (basically what it does in a top mount solution)?
 
Well that is the other consideration that I left out. My case is sitting partly on a wire shelf and partly on a desk. The wire shelf is what the psu part of the case sits on.

I would not leave it on the carpet. Even if you get a piece of wood. But that is just me.
 
does that mean, when you have a bottom psu socket, the fan on the psu face downward and not upward?
 
Yes, the 690 II has vent holes on the bottom. You have the option to mount the PSU with the fan up or down. This doesn't apply to all bottom mounting cases. As it wasn't an option in my old Antec 900.
