ok, i have a 733MHz CPU and was planning on getting a 5900Ultra when prices drop, but i was just wondering if my cpu will bottleneck it way to much when i could get a cheaper one for less money and same performance. does it work like this or will the 5900 just powerhouse the FPS up to playable framerates anyway?

What do you have right now with you 733? Maybe you should upgrade your processor/mobo/memory. Then think about video card. I would try to find a ti4200 cheap to go with that processor. Unless you have something similar now.

Hello,

Your CPU is definatley going to bottleneck the card. I have a dual celeron box both cpu's @ 600 Mhz and a Geforce Ti 4200 128 MB and in every game I play regardless of resoloution and settings I still get the same framerate. A 5900 on that machine would probally play some older games pretty good but if your looking to play anything new ex FarCry you would most likely be better off going with a MB/Proc upgrade. On my celeron box I can play FarCry @ 640X480 in Open GL and low details at about 20-25 FPS but there are times it hits the 10's. If you geet a good deal on it I would go for it but I think its time you start thinging of a full system upgrade if your plan to play HL2/D3. Take Care.

Zachary

o and right now i get about 20AVG. fps on ut2004 demo at 800600 with a mix of low medium and high settings

you would do better to wait, save your money, and do a full upgrade on that machine

You still wont get playable framrates with 733mhz. Even with a 5900u. You need to upgrade your mb/processor first

well you would need new mobo, cpu, ram, vid card at the very minimum. as for price, it depends what you decide to buy, but if you want to get it cheap, get and athlon xp chip and an nf2 mobo.

and im going to get all this with an $8/week allowance with $106 now right?

hey, I don't pic the circumstances, but if you have a cheaper way to do It, do tell. with the amounts we are talking it might be cheaper to get a new computer though if you get a good deal on it.

ok i got some stuff here tell me if its good: Chaintech nforce2 Ultra 400 and a AMD Athlon XP 2500+. will this be all i need then i can get a 5900U?

Yes, that CPU will compliment the 5900 very well. I agree with Merlin, the NF7-S is a great board, I built a rig for my friend using it. No problems at all.

ok i see this going somewhere but would just getting a $737 Gateway paying so many dollars a month for 2 yrs. be a better idea?

depends on your experience of mounting a heatsink on a processor. and how much that you have to put out for an upgrade right now.

I think you should do the memory/proc/mobo upgrade, keep the gf2 mx for right now. (I have played ut2k4 on a gf2mx, but with a good processor, it may look ugly, but it is playable.

Then when you have the money, get the best bang for your buck video card when you have $150 to $200 saved up.

ok so if i get the Abit and the Athlon Xp and take my puter down to a local puter place and have them install everything will it work? i currently have intel everything so???

yes, but they should pop the processor in for free, don't let them charge you much if anything, it takes 10 seconds to do. What psu do you have?

i was geting there creed;) here is the total of my full upgrade, tell me if it will all work smoothly and be a good upgrade: $105 Abit $60 Athlon XP $50 PSU and probly by the time i save $150 video card this at a total of.....$315 i think (all in my head)

sounds like a winner. You will be very impressed.

ok i like to know everything EXACTLY cause i dont want to buy anything i shouldnt have. all i do is buy everything i listed and give it to the store and ill get a brand new puter back right? And will i have to buy everything at once or can i wait on the PSu and vc?

-Thanks

You're gonna have to buy a new PSU, I really doubt the one in your current computer could handle any modern system. Here's a nice system that's a little over $300 all priced at Newegg.com:
Antec SLK3700AMB (comes with 350watt PSU and is a nice case) $59.99
Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 (only 1 stick, leaves future upgrade to 1gb possible) $96
Asus A7N8X-X (nice nforce 2 motherboard, pretty cheap too, only go with NF7 if you really plan on major overclocking) $69
AMD Athlon XP 2500 Retail (comes with heatsink) $80
Total $304

Just use your current video card for a bit, or you could look on ebay or something and get a geforce 4 ti for like $50-70. As long as AA/AF is off geforce 4's can run pretty much any game at 1280x1024. You could easily build this system yourself, all you have to do is follow the directions in your motherboard manual (pretty easy put maching male/female ends together basically).

why are you stuck on getting a 5900?
Ati 9800 has better frame rates, by that time the price for it will go down and you'll be able to afford it

umm..uve confused me^ I think im going to go with ABIT NF7-s with Athlon 2500+, 256MB DDR PC2700, an AHANIX 400W PSU, and finally a GeforceFX 5900. I might be getting a deal with one of my dads friends too. (he tells me they got a deal for $120 on something like this)(except the VC)I hope this is a gaming machine!!

Definetly get 512mb of ram. It is well worth the expense. For gaming you'd be almost no better off with 256mb of ram than with what you have now. Why do you want a Geforce fx 5900? Go for a ATi 9800pro, they cost just as much if not less now, and it is a far far better video card. And who is AHANIX, DO NOT I repeat, DO NOT skimp out on some no name PSU. I had tons of trouble when I did. Wattage is not everything in a PSU. I'm sure a 350W name brand PSU would be much better than that AHANIX 400W PSU. Go with an antec or enermax PSU. I cannot stress how important it is that you do not skimp out on your PSU.

What you need is:
Athlon Mobile XP 2600+ CPU (Mobile is unlocked)
DFI Infinity NFII Ultra (allows up to 3.3 of vdimm)
512 Corsair XMS Pro PC4000 -or- OCZ RAM (For FSB of 250)

can I get a stick of PC3200 because theres 512 for 95 on newegg.com instead of 2700? and wont the 9800Pro need more then 350W (minimum) and im going to be getting or planning on getting the things merlin has said such as mobo/proc.

If you're not stuck on the 5900u, I would definitely go for the 9800pro. I know a few friends that are running the 9800pro on a generic 300w psu.

and how much is a pimped out case with nothing with and will it cost more then the $50 it took to put in my gay gf2 to put all this stuff together for me?

You can get some very nice cases at newegg for 50bucks w/o psu. Just search through until you find something you like, cases are very subjective to the individual.

kk do i need to be concerned about size? and would a psu that came wit it be fine?

mid tower seems to be the fav, especially if you are a lan gamer. As long as it has at least a 300w.

Tivon don't suggest an overclocking system to someone who obviously has little to no knowledge or want to overclock.

XSNiper go with what everyone has been telling you you and save the extra money and ignore Tivon's comment imo.

hi i found a new comp for 489 i believe with a 2800+ 120GB HD 512MB RAM and more with a GF4 MX (has to better then a gf2 mx pci but will be replaced later on)
