i am working on upgrading my setup part by part...

but how much do you think a Q6600 wound bottleneck my 295's how much better would something like a i7 950 be?

Maybe make a sig so we can see what youur system is. i7s really shine in SLI situations, so if you have 295 SLI, then it would probably be a pretty decent upgrade. For a single 295, maybe not so much - depends on what games you are talking about.
 
right now the system is a QQ6600 8gb ram 680i mobo
and i mostly play wow (25man endgame guild)
and sc2 i play on a 24" @ 1900X1200 res
 
I don't play WoW, but I think I've heard that newer CPUs can improve performance. Someone will chime in, I'm sure.
 
You could always overclock the Q6600. Not sure how high you will be able to go on that 680i board, but going from 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz+ will give you a nice increase in speed.
