Bottleneck?

Hi all,
I need some input. I was playing call of duty 2 and notice some slow down in certain levels. I was wondering if my cpu is the bottleneck or do I just need a faster video card.
My specs:

asus a8n sli premium
cpu: 3500
video: BFG 7800gt @ 480 and 1.10
2gb of corsair xms
74gb raptor drive
300gb 16mb maxtor

Any advice/comments are appreciated.
Thanks,
T

What FPS numbers are you getting? Are you talking HDD trash slowdown or video slow down or both?

Oops for got the res. I like to run it at 1280 x 1024 with max settings.

have not try looking at the FPS yet....guess I can do that. If I do, will that allow me to know if the cpu or the video is the weaker link?

If your HDD isn't thrashing and you're getting the slow downs it's either your CPU or your AA is set too high and crunching your GPU. I don't know much about CoD2 and what it's natural bottleneck is. :(

What is you AA set at? I have a 7800GT and generally I can play at the same resolution you are with all settings and AF maxed but no AA. With these settings everythign stays really smooth but if I start to turn on the AA very high i get some choppyness in certain games. Just turn down your AA a little and see if it goes away - that is assuming you have the AA turned on fairly high.

at that res a 3500 wouldnt bottleneck your card if you played at max settings...maybe by 1fps

I like to have all the eye candy turned up on max if possible, right now I have AA on 4. So it sounds like to might need to up grade the video card rather than the CPU. Would a 7900gt be worth it from a 7800gt or should I do the x1800xt512 for about the same price or maybe a x1900xt or 7900gtx?

Not even a 3000+ creates a bottleneck in modern games, never mind a 3500+. Your CPU is OK.

well if you WANT to upgrade to a new card sell yours for 200-225 and then buy a x1800xt for 300 or 7900gt its your choice

I just bought a 299 1800xt 512mb and I'm happy with it..
didn't see shelling out an extra 100+ for the next card up. I'll use that 100 to upgrade again in a year or so.

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of the 7900gtx or the x1900xtx. Between the two I am somewhat concern about the noise level of the x1900xtx and the power consumption because my power source is an Antec smart power 2.0 400W. I am not sure if it can run the ATI.

What other hardware do you have in your case? If not too many HDDs or optical drives you'll be fine as long as it's not in crossfire.

Replace the stock XTX cooler with something and you'll be as happy as a pig in mud.

I have three HD and two optical drives. Not planning to run x-fire.

I have a Tsunami case with three fans but only using two fans as the fans on the side seems to impeed air flow. Oh I forgot that I also have a card reader too and a wireless card. I think that's all...I have never had any problems running the 7900gt over clocked, but then again the 1900xtx will consume more power.

Yea I thought that might be the case. Maybe it's time for a 500-600W power supply. Thanks for all the help...

I am running a 400w fortron source on my system.

opteron 148
1800xt 512mb

no problems so far.
