first, sorry if this is wrong place, but its gpu related so id imagine it goes here.

would an intel celeron e1200 dual core bottle neck an ati hd4670 video card?

i noticed in rivatuner that my gpu usage doesnt go above 40% even though i lag horribly in all games i run and get poor fps.

bf2
guildwars
warhammer 40k soulstorm. etc...

system specs are as follows.

intel e1200 1.6gig dual core
2gigs ddr2 dual channel
160gig sata2 drive
ati hd4670 1gig
win7 rc, clean.

ty in advance for any and all answers :)

Have you tried OCing the processor? (Where did you get it? HP/Dell etc. or did you build it yourself?)

is this a laptop? lol

that aside, yeah that CPU is probably a piece, I know Atom and most of the Core Solo/Celeron junk will bottleneck most games, because they don't meet the min req or barely support the software

cant overclock, running an intel dq45cb motherboard.

was originally a home server pc, but since i started to paint my laptop, im using this.

was built by me.

when im running games, no matter what resolution or graphical settings, i get the same fps range or very little increase when i drop to lower resolutions.

i understand that.

what im wondering though, is my cpu bottlenecking my gpu?

no point in upgrading cpu to a decent dual/quad if it isnt going to help improve game play on the games i mentioned above.

bf2/guildwars/w40k

my guess is it's probably windows 7 (drivers and games not mature enough)*shrug* I know i was running guildwars with an x800xtpe and it was running beautifully on a...crap I think it was a Athon XP 3200+

But I'd say your processor is bottle necking you too. There's kind of a whole mess going on there with that pc ;)

yea, i know its a mess, but i just got this video card, and it should handle gw flawlessly, aswell as the cpu, but it doesnt.

so i was thinking bottleneck as the gpu never goes above 40% usage.

the cpu does have very little cache. and i know win7 is an rc, but its still more stable then vista XD

so i dunno.

why i was thinking maybe the cpus cache was bottlenecking the gpu to harshly or something.

-edit-

im running guildwars now, 1280x1024 max settings max AA.

i get fps dips that go from 120+ down to 10fps with vsync off.

it does this no matter what graphics settings or resolution.

with vsync on, itll sit at 60fps and dip occasionally to 10fps, no matter what graphical settings or resolution.

and the gpu rarely goes passed 40-50% usage.

those facts alone make me believe its cpu related. am i right?

you've asked the same question something like 6 times, and gotten the same answer something like 6 times

so lets try again
you say: is my CPU bottlenecking my PC?
everyone is saying: probably, but theres too many variables, such as Win7 RC, immature drivers, and various other factors that you aren't accouting for

is it getting through yet?

Okay, the answer is YES, because dual core at 1.6ghz can't accelerate 1080p h264/x264 without hiccuping.

ive gotten two "possibly" answers and no suggestions as to what else to try. no reason to get snippy about it.

not trying to push 1080p but ty for the reply.

as for the suggestions of cutting out variables.

xp or vista?

and which version of drivers? atm im running 9.9 catalyst.

generally you're gonna get told to wait for Cat 9.10
as far as what OS to try, I'd try XP, because it actually works, and isn't a bleeding resource hog

as far as the claim that "1.6ghz" cannot do "x", inaccurate, a given model @ 1.6ghz may not be able to, but clockspeed means nothing.

ty for the reply.

im currently trying a very VERY stripped version of vista and i seem to of gained a very noticeable boost in gaming performance, though my gpu still only peaks at 45-55% usage.

its beginning to look like win7 was the culprit, but im still going to get a decent quad with something more then 512kb L2 ;)

ideas on a cheap quad that has at least 2 to 4mb L2?
atm im eyeballing the Q6600.

ty again.
