Bose Companion Speakers

For what you will pay for those, you can get just as good a quality out of altec lansing speakers and have plenty of cash for something else

they both use the same materials and altecs pricing makes sense

Ok thanks man.

Which Altec Lansing do you recommend? I would like a 5.1 Surround Sound that is less than $250.00.

$250? You can get an Onkyo HT-S590S for that much $$!!!

Just another example of Bose bending the undereducated masses over and raping their wallets.

Ya, Bose kind of ranks along with Monster Cable in my book. The products they make are not bad, contrary to what some might say. They are well built and sound good, however they just aren't really worth the money.

Unless they offer you a feature you really want that you can't get elsewhere, I'd look at another brand. The only thing they tend to be impressive for is decent sound out of a small package, but you do pay out the nose for it.

I have the Companion 3s only because my uncle is a manager at a Bose store and I got those for like 129.99. Nice speakers and sound great, but for the retail price you can do better.

I wish people would finally realize that Bose rhymes with "blows" for a good reason. They suck and are horribly overpriced and will never allow reviews against a good competitor.

Now before a whole bunch you rise in arms for your favorite brand look at putting any set of Blose agains a set of Energy Varitas and watch your love fade away. Now the Varitas are roughly 20% more expensive, but 20 times better sounding.

There is never a reason to consider Bose. There is always a better and cheaper alternative.

Haha ok ok no more Bose for me.

The Onkyo is nice but I am not really looking for a Home theater system. I just want really good sounding multimedia speakers that are great for games and also music.

BTW thanks for all your opinions I highly appreciate them.

I'd have to recommend the Swan M200's, if you don't need surround sound. See here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836136102

Not the best for thumping bass, but excellent sound for the money.

^^^

that's just a pair of speakers. what He is looking for is a 5.1 speaker set.

I currently Use a set of Altec lansing GT5051 speakers. it's a 5.1 set up but with the rear channels reflecting. you can see them here: http://www.shopping.com/xFS?KW=altec+lansing+gt5051&x=0&y=0

though it seems they are hard to come by now. there are other altec solutions that might be better suited for you. I have these due to limited space. I used to use what's in my sig but that's in the living room now

Also I agree bose is ok for what they are. a small package but at a horrible price. When used with other speaker sets though they really show how bad they are. Note to everyone if you're ever in the same situation as me and have to piece your setup over time. Never try to use a cube as your center channel... allll bad

A HT setup is great for BOTH music and games. The receiver has dedicated 5.1 inputs, so you can use all the processing from your sound card for gaming. And upgrading various components means just switching them out, you dont need to go out and buy a whole new system to have new features. For instance, if you bought a stereo setup (like the bose one you pointed to) and then wanted surround sound, you'd have to buy a whole new system. Want a digital input? You'd have to buy a whole new system. What you want a subwoofer now? Can't do that with the swans without ghettoing it. Buy a whole new system. Speakers sound too tinny and sound is weak? Buy a whole new system. With the HT setup, you can replace any part of it that you like, but there really is no point since it is already better than just about any computer system.

Oh yeah, did I mention you can get it for cheap?

Thanks again for the replies.

Ok now I am seriously thinking on buying the Onkyo system.

Killernoodle thanks for the great website. :)

I've learned that the more advertising that you see, the more crap-tas-tic the product is (see Bud Light vs. Guinness).

I made the mistake of getting the 701's, 301's and the centre piece, and i couldn't get anywheres near the sound that I heard in a studio. Come to find out that the environment there is purposely set up to ensure that, vs. a home environment.

Onkyo makes a pretty decent budget set. I recommend that as well
