As for the mod, pretty damn cool looking, obviously took some time to make ("This project took us 9 months, in which I spent 250hours of my spare time.") However, I'm surprised that they took such a long time to make a Star Trek themed case ( ehh, I'm not a fan myself...). They are obviously fanatics if they spent 250 hours (10+ straight days) to make it. I say congrats and very nice attention to detail.

Wow, thats pretty cool.
That would be a good passtime. I never have anything to do.. maybe i should make a something themed case... Bah nevermind im getting tired already.
I used to be a fan of star trek and own a few of the games for it and thats quite interesting, even though I'm not into star trek anymore.

Although i appluad the effort put into it, its sort of like that Mazda miata that the guy turned into a star wars fighter, cool, but lame.

That was a honda del Sol.

I think the cube is very cool. Although I would most likely never spend that much time on a case or do something that detailed I think it came out extremely nice.

cool, but it looks kinda freaky

would be funny to see ppl's reaction when they see that thing in real life

Not to say I would do such a thing, or could, I have other hobbies...

But am I the only one disappointed about it being cardboard?

No...I was kinda disappointed by that as well. Any kind of cardborad would just be too flimsy. To easy to FUBAR. If he had used plastic or even aluminium then it would be 1337. As it is though its still pretty impressive.

Cool case, I like the look of it, and I bet being out of carboard makes it pretty light, but a fire hazzard?. But why would you make something 30cm cubed when you have a motherboard that is 17cm square? Could have made the whole thing a little more compact, IMHO. a 20cm cube would have been better in my opinion. Still looks cool if your a STTNG fan.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the whole exterior is made up of those metal wires, so maybe its a little more sturdy than we think right off the bat. Perhapse those wires actually give it strength. *shrug*

Card board is pretty strong if you get the right stuff. It all depends on how many layers and how it's held together. :)

I think that Borg cube is bad ass. I use to be a fan of star trek and the borg was my favorite!

Very cool mod but this just screams geek lol:

* To Route: Collective – A central point where everything comes together and gets sent out to multiple computers.
* Act as Firewall: To prevent hostile attempts to penetrate the system, and neutralize them.
* To Download: All your bytes will be assimilated…
* And, the Borg are just cool…..

I think it was a great project...took a little long but still very nice...now for those of you who think cardboard is to flimsy check THIS out

It simply amazes me at what people on this forum will cry about.

I don't know why but I just had to react to this post...

It was pretty hard to think up a story to but on the internet with the cube. I could have just stated the way it was build, but thought it would be nice to have some history and background as to why I chose to build a borg cube. Yes I like star trek but I do not go to ST conventions waring Vulcan ears, or a ST uniform. I have even never been to a ST convention. I just wanted to make a themed case and thought the borg were cool.

But that is enough of the devensive shit... I am glad you like it.

Here are some awnsers to the questions in this forum:

Unless you hold cardboard to an open fire it will not catch fire. And how often do you throw your computercase on the BBQ? :D

The weight of the case total is about 8-10 Kilograms, actualy cardboard is not that light.

The size was mainly determained by the size of the PSU, I could/should have used an external PSU but they were very hard to get in the Netherlands at that time.

As to the strength of cardboard, the inner cube is made out of grayboard (solid cardboard) and has been coated with woodglue when that hardens the cardboard becomes as strong as thick plastic. The main advantage of using cardboard is offcause that it is very eazy to cut and shape when in uncoated state.

my god.. thats a nice case.

I wanted to do something simliar, but i'm just too damn lazy to actually do it.

nice to see someone's idea come to life and with such great results...

i'm just curious where he plugs all his accessories in.... haha

*LOL* I watched a "While You Were Out" (or was it "Trading Spaces") where they used that exact cardboard furniture. IIRC they were able to sit down on them relitivly easily, but I think in the end they actually broke one or didnt put it togeather right or something.

Using cardboard to make a case could be a major breakthrough for us living in flats... no way I can spend all evening cutting ALU plates with my dremel without disturbing my neightbours.

It looks very scratchbuilt. . shurely you havent got a carrer in scratchbuilding StarTrek/Star Wars models? :)

Nope the borg cube was a one time deal, maybe I will make a ST themed case voor my external 2,5" HD and/or CD-RW. But for now this is it....

Make a Borg sphere for your external HD to go along with your Borg cube. Now that would be awesome.
