So I run bootvis.exe (microsoft startup performance enhancement utility), and my computer won't start back up. Tried repairing my OS, and still, nothing. What gives? Is this a known issue? Any help would be great....

More description....does the computer not come on or does it not boot into windows, if the later what error are you getting? It should not do this though obviously and has never happened to me.

After the Windows XP Professional screen it freezes when the screen is slightly gray.

Microsoft pulled bootvis from distribution in 2003

The Bootvis.exe tool is no longer available from this site

"Tim over at MajorGeeks send words that Microsoft has removed BootVis from their website

Just to let you know, Microsoft removed BootVis a while ago and now their website, dated September 19th, says the file has been removed, but I do not see a reason. The web pages are still up with all the information. We do have the file archived if anyone is looking for.

considering it was a popular tool, Id reckon it was do to "issues"

well, as helpful as that is, as I see it I'm still screwed. I had the bootvis.exe tool in a dump folder on an old hard drive, and I ran it. How can I go about getting this fixed? I can't even boot in safe mode....

BootVis is pointless to run.... This is why Microsoft pulled it.

BootVis simply forces XP's boot optimization processes to run. XP itself is ALWAYS doing this. It takes about 3 boots before the optimizations occur automatically. (XP has to collect some info on driver and application usage)

How to Run a Repair Install? would probably do it
or further research (google bootvis problem?)
and find out specifics?

As I said in my first post, I tried this several times. Each time I end up in the same place, or stuck at a screen that says "SETUP IS RESTARTING.........." after it should be booting into windows. I booted onto another hard drive and I can see all my files, is there anything I can do WITHOUT doing a winxp install to possibly repair the system files? Thanks again!

actually you said you tried to repair the OS,
which is sort of nebulous, over three quarters of the time I do that
I simply replace the registry hive from a parallel install with a copy of it from a couple of boots back (but then I have an ap that keeps a copy of the registry from the last 30 boots) the rest of the times its a specific error like ntldr missing

wherein is your problem, you dont know what it is, it almost sounds like a corrupted driver,
as the critical system files where replaced with that repair install

Well, after I ran bootvis.exe and rebooted, my computer started up normal, until after it completed the "windows xp professional" screen, in which it would just hang at a gray screen. If I try to boot into safe mode, says windows cannot boot in safe mode, and restarts. Tried two different XP disks, one still would not boot to desktop, and the other one froze at "SETUP WILL NOW RESTART...". Not as in restart your computer, but something I have not seen before, as in start the setup over again.

Sounds like some sort of driver error, but a critical one, as I cannot even boot to safe mode...

Somewhat off topic, but I was curious...

but then I have an ap that keeps a copy of the registry from the last 30 boots

What app exactly is this? Is it freeware, and if so where can I get it?

Thanks,
Kevin

O&O BlueCon
errr... it not freeware your for a measly $350
actually I have an earlier version that ran $40 or so, no longer available, has less functionality and was probably a public release marketing test of the concept

you could probably cobble together a script employing NTFSDOS to do the same thing, but Id ask that question in Webmastering and Programing, I wouldnt know where to start
