My g/f just found a laptop that her father used to own, my g/f says that he had a security program or something installed on the comp.

What happens is, press the power button
comp powers up, fans spin..
but the monitor stays blank
after about 10-15 sec, the computer BEEPS and the fans stop spinning, but you can hear the hard drive whir.

My g/f says that you have to enter a password and then the screen will turn on and the computer will finish booting up and run normal.

We dont have the password or whatever, and we cant get it because her father is Scitsophrenic (sp) and believed the govt. was out to get him and this is why the computer has this problem...

My g/f would like to use this comp for school and what not, but its basically a paperweight right now.

Thats one hell of a security setup. Since you have physical access to the laptop, a possible solution would be to remove the BIOS battery. The problem is that laptop manufactures cramp everything into the chassis very well. On a PC this wouldnt be a problem. Would you mind posting what kind of laptop the make is?
 
is there a jumper nearby the battery? i dunno, on my desktop mobo you have to move a jumper over a position for 10 seconds to get it to clear, maybe it shorts it out and clears the memory or something.
 
I left the batterys out of the comp for 6hrs today, and still no progress. I got it to boot up when I got pissed and hit ctrl alt delete like 10 time on a row rapidly. So is it getting stuck in post? Since it recognized ctrl alt del?
 
try a different hard drive in the laptop.

The Dell's have a security option where you must enter a password to unlock the hard drive to allow the computer to boot from the drive.
 
Are you sure it's a security program, and not just a bad monitor? I'd try starting it up connected to an external monitor, or try starting it with a live Linux CD.
 
Got it to go, seems it might have been a corupt version of windows? Any ways i formated it and am in the process of installing Windows. Thanks guys
