Can you bootup and install windows with an external optical drive connected to the computer via a usb enclosure?

Sorry to bother again. I am still having problems. My notebook does support usb booting because I made a bootable installation of xp (bartpe) on my usb thumb drive. However, even though it sees the drive at startup in the enclosure and even gives me the name, it doesn't recognize it or boot from it or allow me to boot from it. I can use the recovery console in winxp to access the drive also. Is there any way to see the drive and boot by itself?
