Booting problems (I might've fried my cpu)

This morning I woke up and my computer was off (even though I had left it on), except that the little power LED was on. Pressing the power button did nothing, I had to hold ti for 4 seconds to do a "hard" shut off. After that nothing would turn it on.

So I hooked up another PSU to the mobo and video, but forgot to hook up the cpu fan (whoops). I booted it and it got to self-checking screen then stopped. Again I had to do a "hard" shut off, which usually isn't neccessary until windows is running.

I realized my folly, and hooked up the cpu fan, but it still stops at the same part, just before checking for ATA devices. It also reposts my 2500+ Barton as running at 1100Mhz. Is my cpu screwed? And the original PSU as well?

Do a bios reset and try again. I am not sure if the bartons have thermal protection, but if they don't there is a chance that the cpu is screwed. The original psu is prolly dead.

Maybe not, it is trying to POST and it is seeing the cpu, you may have got very very lucky. The BIOS settings are messed up or there is a problem with the motherboard. It sounds like its runnin your barton at 100 MHz FSB.

Sounds like it as after sorting out the cpu fan it wont power up the board while the replacement one will.

Not a lot of details to go on, take out or disconnect everything but the cpu, one sitck of memory/ a hard drive, and the video card, clear the bios with the jumper. see what happens. Can you get into the bios ?

If its stopping before the drive reconization perhaps your drive has failed, be sure to check all the connections on that. If you can get into the bios see if you drive is listed etc. etc.
