Developers at the Linux Plumbers Conference demonstrated a Linux system booting in five seconds. Five seconds. Can you believe that? Wow.

The hardware was an Asus EEE PC, which has solid-state storage, and the two developers beat the five second mark with two software loads: one modified Fedora and one modified Moblin. They had to hold up the EEE PC for the audience, since the time required to finish booting was less than the time needed for the projector to sync.

That would make me want to use Linux more if it went into OpenSuse. And maybe if sleep worked too. :p
 
With the new SSD technologies, I think we're going to be seeing much more of this regardless of the operating platform being used.

They mentioned that on a conventional disk the boot time was 10 seconds. That's still very impressive. Especially considering this:

Windows and Mac can't even come close to claiming that.

There are plenty of things that can be done to boot linux in such times...
This is OLD news, just someone has come along and publicised it (taking credit away from a couple of hobby gentoo dev's that did alot for this... init-ng, openRC, readahead)

My eeepc with archlinux is at xfce desktop in ~5sec
My main desktop is at GDM login ~10sec (I can improve this by doing parallel startup on OpenRC just not enabled it for other reasons)

I thnink my EMPEG boots in five seconds. It runs linux and boots from disk.

Until they can make an IBM server boot in 5 seconds, then they've accomplished nothing, NOTHING I SAY!!!!

Anyone that's rebooted an IBM xSeries machine would know what I'm talking about.

lol Dell PowerEdges under load is more or less the same way. It takes for fricken ever for it to fire up.

Fastest I've gotten X & linux to load was about 20seconds (good 5 years ago) on a 40mb ide ssd. Was doing it to make a carpc. 5sec would be a lot better than 20sec. I just hope they would put up a how-to.
