Booting Issues

Hello, I have a problem with my computer and I'm not sure what to make of it. Basically... I boot my computer up use it for awhile, then say I turn it down..then immediately go to boot it back up. It starts to boot up but immediately shuts down before it reaches the BIOS screen.

Also, if I decide to play a game say...Counter-Strike VERSION 1.3 (Yeah, its outdated, but I'm on dialup and played some PODBots) after about 15-20minutes of gameplay my computer locks up and shuts down.

I've also recently bought a new harddrive, went to format and put Windows XP Professional on, but it would lock up and shut down at 10% into the format.

Computer Specs:
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe v1.04
AthlonXP 2400+
Samsung 512 PC2700
PowerColor GeForce2 Pro 64MB

I would run memtest86 on your ram (seperately if you have more then 2 sticks) and see if there are any errors.

Would also try disabling automatic reboot (If you are running WinXP follow these directions)

Right click "My Computer"
Select Properties
Click Advanced Tab
Click Settings under "Startup and Recovery"
Uncheck "Automatic Restart"

Then tell us the error when and if you blue screen.

that CPU temp is off the scale! Is that idle or load? I thought the XP's shut down at 90c to prevent damage?

Check your HS fan and if its good, blow the dust out of it, and re-apply thermal paste to the HS/core. You gotta lower them temps on the CPU.

*edit* Maximum Die (cpu) temp is 90c for those suckers. You sir have a dire heat problem. You absolutely have to lower those temps or you are going to have your system shutdown to avoid damage to it.

Err, sorry, I was editing my post as you replied. Your heat is over the top. Check your HS/fan on the cpu.

I think...my computer may have been having this problem for over 2 years since I built it. I just never checked into it. I moved away stopped using it, recently started using it again as I just got internet after not having it for 2 years. Now it's just annoying me.

well, shut it down, remove the HS/fan and check that you have thermal grease (not too much) and its even across teh die. :)

Hey, removed the old stuff that was on the heatsink and processor using vodka... then I put some thermal compound on.. But now it says I have an 1800+ processor any ideas? I checked BIOS and set everything, but it keeps saying 1800+, I have a 2400+

update: well i just checked my CPU temp its still at 86-88C, I updated my BIOS figuring maybe that would put my clock speed back at 2400+, but its still at 1800+...

Hello again, I fixed my CPU clock speed by resetting the CMOS. I re-did the entire cleaning HS and proc and reapplied the thermal compound...CPU temp is now 69 instead of 88...
