Alright, I recently formated my 250Gb HDD so that I could install windows XP on it. At the same time, I had my 80Gb HDD w/ the OS in my computer. The format went smooth, and the 250 was good to go. XP installed fine, I transfered all my files from the 80 to the 250 and now its time to remove the 80gb hdd. BUT...for some reason I can't boot to windows w/o the 80Gb being in the computer! I tried taking it out, but the computer won't boot to windows. There are no jumpers on my 250gb SATA drive, so how do I make that HDD the primary drive?

Is the 80GB a PATA drive? If so, you will need to mark the system partition on your 250GB drive active, and copy the files boot.ini, ntdetect.com (if present) and NTLDR to the system partition on your 250GB drive. You may also need to edit boot.ini.

A repair install will fix this as well, make sure only your new 250GB is connected when you perform it.

My 80Gb is an IDE drive...donno what PATA is.

If I do a repair install, won't it delete my documents/music?

If you repair the installation it will not delete the files you currently have on there.

So I just boot from the XP CD and do windows repair?

EDIT: Ok, i'm in the repair console...what to I type?

How do I do it the manual way? I heard that way deletes the service packs...and I don't feel like DLing/Installing anything after. I'm booted up now, and I have access to both HDD's...what should I do?

do you mean you are in the recovery console?

that is not where you want to be.

you want to go to install xp and then you will get an option to repair the installation

here are some instructions for you.
