Well, believe it or not the loudest thing in my rig ATM is a 250Gb Spinpoint. It's not terribly loud, but noticably. So I though I'd set it up in one of my enclosures and boot from it externally. I got it all setup up and when I try to boot, it posts fine and I get the white bars going across the bottom like its loading drivers or something. But when it's time for the black Windows loading screen, it'll begin to fade in and then just restart. Once it flashed a BSOD for a millisecond but it wasn't long enough to see any of the words. System's in the sig. Any ideas why it's having problems booting? Oh, and it boots internally perfectly. Thank in advance!
 
When you boot off it internally: right-click on My Computer->Advanced->Startup and Recovery->Disable "Automatically Reboot..." checkmark. That way you should be able to see the BSOD.

Also check the event log.

Another quick question to throw in: Would performance lag at all by going through a USB cable (and USB hub at the moment)? Could it effect gaming or transfer speeds?

4. How fast is USB 2.0?
USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps, and it is rated 40 times faster than its predecessor interface, USB 1.1, which tops at 12Mbps. Originally, USB 2.0 was intended to go only as fast as 240Mbps, but in October 1999, USB 2.0 Promoter Group pumped up the speed to 480Mbps.


As far as we know, effective rate reaches at 40MBps or 320Mbps for bulk transfer on a USB 2.0 hard drive with no one else is sharing the bus. Flash Drives seem to be catching up too with the some hitting 30MB/s milestone. For all we know, manufacturers may claim USB interface becoming the performance bottleneck for flash drives as early as 2007.
Additional notes from Alex Esquenet - our engineer friend based in Belgium: "A fast usb host can achieve 40 MBytes/sec. The theorical 60 MB/sec cannot be achieved, because of the margin taken between the sof's (125 us), so if a packet cannot take place before the sof, the packet will be rescheduled after the next sof. On top of that, all the USB transactions are handled by software on the PC. For instance, a USB host on a PCI bus will send or receive the data via the PCI bus; the stack will prepare the next data in memory and receive interrupt from the host."

Ouch! If I'm reading this right the max speed of USB is less than half the max speed of IDE Ultra 133 (60 vs 133)

I'd assume a definitly performance lag.

I tried this, but the BSOD was just a stupid "STOP 0X00000078......" message. I even tried to just reinstall windows on an external drive to see if it worked. The BIOS listed the external drive in the Hard Disk Boot sequence, but when I tried the Windows disk and it lists the drives and asks which you want to install it on, the external drive wasn't there! It's been there in the past with a different enclosure (bad experience, I accidently picked the external when I didn't mean to and wiped out all of my storage!) Any ideas?
 
Alright, it was a ovel idea but I give up! This morning I hooked up the external and installed Windows on a second partition. It took a few tries but Windows setup finally found the drive. The file copying in DOS went fine, but as soon as the PC had to reboot, load windows, and continue the installation the exact same problem was happening. It'd start loading windows and freeze/restart.

So I'm crying uncle. I guess I'll just have to get used to a little louder hard drive.
 
If you go SATA you can do this setup pretty easily, with no performance loss.
