Booting from a DVD drive?

Hey guys!

I am having a little problem with installing a new system.
Recently, I have upgraded my hard drive. With this change came switching from PATA to SATA. Since I had a DVD Drive connected with SATA, I had had an expansion card making it possible to connect SATA devices with my old motherboard, which does not have onboard SATA inputs.
Now, I have connected both the DVD drive and the hard drive to the card, and tried to boot from a Windows 7 DVD.

I cannot boot.

Any help?
 
Does your board have the option to boot from "other device" ...
 
Boot sequence:
1. PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A
2. Hard-Disk Drive C:
3. IDE CD-ROM Device
4. Diskette Drive

I have checked only no. 1.
I have unplugged all IDE hard drives, but the IDE CD-ROM device is still connected. Does it matter?
 
Try mashing on F12 when booting up (or maybe it was F10) to manually select a boot device.
 
Could be several other keys. In the last year I have seen ESC, F2, and F8 as other choices. However I deal with dozens of motherboards.
 
It was F12, but unfortunately this is what I get:

strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

I tried installing XP, and then upgrading to Win7, but XP Disc won't recognise my hard drive

you'll have to put the controller's drivers on a floppy and hit F6 during setup to install them XP to see the disks on that controller.


another option: If you can boot from USB drives, try creating bootable Win7 installation on one. I've been using one since Win7 came out.

Hmm... From what I see, the drive is still not recognised?

"Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently, Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices:

*To specify additional SCSI adapters, (...) press S

*If you do not have any other devices, press enter"



And I cannot boot form USB.

it may or may not..try unplugging it.....I had anolder board that would always try and use the IDE drive unless I physically unplugged it

This is expected. From this point you need to supply the driver for your storage controller on a floppy I believe. I am not sure it will take one from a USB.
 
Ubuntu has regonised my hard drive, but I don't really see how this will solve my problem.

It helps however. That means the problem is needing the correct driver on a floppy and not a hardware or boot issue.
 
I will install Ubuntu and see if it detects my DVD drive. Can I install Windows 7 FROM Ubuntu? Without booting?
 
Maybe it'll be a silly question, but can I give my hard-drive to my friend co he can install win7 on a secondary hard-drive? Would that work?
