Booting from a CD

Hey guys,

I just upgraded my system w/ a new mobo/cpu/ram combo and upon booting I find that windows no longer works (Im running XP Pro SP1), and whenever I try to boot it asks if i want to go into safemode, then the machine tries to load XP, and the whole screen turns black for about 20 seconds before rebooting. I pretty much expected this so I set my boot order to CD-ROM, HDD1, HDD2 (I dont have a floppy) and put in my XP disk. However, it doesnt seem to be booting from the CD, it still goesto the harddrive. I also put in an old 98 se disk and it didnt read that either. Am I missing something?

Its a brand new ASUS A7N8X-E with a gig of kingston 3200 ram, 9800 pro, and a barton 2800xp upgraded from an old shuttle mobo (forget the model) with an 1800xp and 512mb of DDR 2100.

Thanks for the help!

Dan

It's a far shot but do you have more than one CD-Rom drive? Try it in the other drive if so.

Also maybe just try taking the hard drives out of the boot order entirely and see what happens. If it starts the install, your set, when it restarts for the first time durring the installation just go into the BIOS and set what you normally use and it'll be cool.

Other than that... Is that a slipstreamed install CD? Maybe you didn't get it setup to boot from the CD properly when you were creating it.

try making the cdrom the only boot device and see if it works then

edit: damn slow fingers :p

Thanks for the fast replies...

To answer your questions - yes its the only CD rom drive in the system.

As for it being a slipstreamed install CD Im not sure... I would think that it should work, and at the very least my 98 SE disk should do the trick (Ive been using that for years to format my drive and stuff - fkdisk is the king :p ).

So I tried your suggestions to remove the other devices from the boot list, and for a second I thought it was going to work. It took me to the black and white screen where it has several thin collums of information and then at the bottom it usually says something like "Boot from cd? hit enter..." well it had that screen only it didnt give me the option to boot from cd! It just sorta hung there for a min and then went to the screen asking if i wanted to start windows in safemode! any ideas?

Anyhow, is there anything else I can try? Am I going to have to mess with a floppy drive or something? :\ or perhaps try the fabled cd boot disk? those things have never worked for me... in fact, I've always had trouble booting from a CD.

P.s. thanks again for the help, hopefully this can get resolved before i head off to school (friday)!

Ah, well, Ive gotten over one hurdle...

I managed to get the system to boot from the cd rom. Apparently there was a "boot from other devices" setting in addition to the boot order that needed to be disabled. Anyhow, I tried booting from the cd rom w/ various copies of windows (XP Pro/98 SE) and I get this error:

DISK BOOT FAILURE: INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

It sounds like the same error that comes up when you leave a floppy disk in the drive and start up your comp - except I have no floppy drive. Well I hooked one up anyways just for the hell of it and that didnt do anything.

So, does anyone have any suggestions in light of this new discovery?

Thanks,

Dan

I couldnt reformat w/ that computer, Im in the process of fixing up my "backup" system and from there I will reformat. My only question is, do you really think its an issue w/ XP already installed on the computer, or is an IDE controller or something screwed up? Reading up on the error message it looks like alot of things can cause it, and I'm having difficulty diagnosing the problem. Heres some things I tried this morning:

-replaced the cd drive
-put the cd drive onto a different IDE connector
-swapped hard drives (w/ another drive w/ XP on it...)

None of that worked for me.

So yeah I guess I really need to reformat to make sure, its just odd how it wont read my cd rom in the first place. I guess XP really is a bitch to deal with when you have new hardware.

are the disks ur using burned, or retail? i have a burned copy of win 98 that needs some other source to hit D:\setup from. also, have you tried swapping mobos?

They are burned disks - the 98 and XP are full installs. The 98 has worked for years for me, at the very least to get me into Fdisk. This is my first time to do a major hardware upgrade w/ XP. As for swapping the motherboard, I havent done that and Im trying to see if it is in fact defective. I have read and heard from friends that XP doesnt like it when you upgrade motherboards so I was expecting to reinstall or something, but this is a little much. I guess if it doesnt work w/ a reformatted hard drive then the board is defective somehow?

I ordered my mobo new off newegg and its an ASUS board, I was hoping that would make for a trouble free install. Ive been working on computers for years and consider myself fairly competent so I thought this would be pretty easy... I guess not tho :\

*UPDATE*

Well, Im just updating this in case someone has experienced anything similar and can help, my problem seems to evolve. Here is the latest new/break down of all the "symptoms":

Whenever I try to boot from a CD I get the following error: BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER which goes on continually no matter what kind of disk I put in there (ive tried copies of 98 and XP Pro, all should have boot files on them).

I reformatted my first harddrive and that didnt do anything since I cant seem to boot from a CD

I put in another harddrive w/ XP pro on it from my other computer. That gives me the option to start windows in safe mode/ boot normally/whatever but it will just go to a black screen after that and then reboot.

Ive tried various IDE cables (cables that I know that work), cd / dvd drives, putting the various drives on different IDE channels, resetting the CMOS and trying it all over again to no avail.

So im going to make a trip to frys to pick up a cheap mobo to see if perhaps the motherboard is deffective.

What makes this problem so fucked up is that in the BIOS the mobo detects my drives and when I put a disk in the drive it reads it, only i still get this error... I dunno it makes it difficult to figure out whats wrong, which is why I am forced to go get a 2nd motherboard...

And thanks to all that have helped me out thus far - I will get to the bottom of this.

since you changed mobos, it is especially lucky that you can boot into safe mode - this will allow you to remove all sorts of devices from the control panel add/remove - get rid of the old nic, soundcard, video card, etc. if you went from VIA to Intel get rid of just about everything - start by removing the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, ide drivers, etc. get rid of old cdroms and dvd drivers if you have upgraded them over theyears. they should all be listed in safe mode. then reboot. the problem may be that it needs 'newer' chipset drivers.

Ah sorry wallijonn, perhaps I wasnt that clear - I cant boot into safemode, it just gives me the option to (among other boot options) - whenever I try I just get a black screen and an eventual reboot. And I reformatted the drive I will be using for the computer so I wont have to deal w/ any of the potential chipset complications you described. Thanks for the advice however. I just got back from the store tho w/ a cheap DFI Nf2 board - hopefully it works.

I hope you did a full backup of your data, favorites, bookmarks (if you're using another browser), email, game saves, utilities, mods, patches, applications, etc. before doing a mobo swap.

it definitely sounds like the drivers did you in, if not the actual way the drivers were formatted.

I usually will do a clean install when changing mobos to clean out thousands of lines from the registry, get rid of unneeded .dlls (like agpgart), etc.

so the best way to proceed is to boot into the hard disk manufacturer's CD and wipe the HD, then do a clean install. you can re-register your wxp online.

Well guys, I have gotten to the bottom of it. I bought this cheap DFI NF2 mobo at frys for 60$. Took it home, set the whole thing up on my desk in 10 mins, booted it up w/ a copy of 98 in the cd rom drive, and it worked instantly. :p So it was the facny ASUS mobo that was the cause of it all. Ah well, its good to have finally figured it all out. Thanks for all the help.
