So I know I can use linux to boot from an IDE - CF adapter but can I do it with vista ultimate? If so how big of a CF card would I need?

I'm looking for a quite low power solution for an HTPC & file server.

If possible would it be stable?

Sure. It just looks like an IDE disk to the OS.

I dunno, how big is your OS when installed? ISTR 15 GB is the number for Vista, so a 16GB card will barely do it.

Stable - yes, until your card wears out. If you disable the Indexing Service, your browser's cache, and so forth, you'll likely get more usage out of it than otherwise, but a year or three is what I'd expect if you do no optimizations.
