boot-up issues with new hard drive installation

Ok here's the deal.. I've had my current set up for a long time now, working great..

36 gig WD Sata drive, 80 gig WD IDE drive.. Abit NF7-S mb..

I bought an 80 gig WD Sata drive and ever since I first connected it, I've been having issues with boot-up..

Basically in the first stages of boot up when it says "Detecting IDE Drives" it kinda just stops booting up and sits there. Freezes up.

So, usually, if I disconnect both Sata drives then it'll turn on... I let it boot up, and shut it off again. Then I connect the 36 gig Sata (the one I've had for a long time), turn it on, and it sits saying "Detecting IDE Drives" for about 30 seconds and then finally starts booting up.. If I repeat that step for the new 80 gig Sata drive, I can get it to work too, but then right back to issues with boot-up right after I restart.. Wtf?

I don't know that much about Sata, so figured someone else could help me.. What's the deal?

I would investigate a firmware update for your SATA controller, and a BIOS update may help as well. Clearing the CMOS and manually reentering your settings may solve the problems as well.

Also, this could potentially be a power supply problem. Please post the brand and number of amps it can deliver on +12, along with any other devices in the system that may pull on +12 (CPU, all drives, vid card, fans, lights, etc)

Post as much info as you can, such as your BIOS version, etc.

1 stick of 256mb (I think 2100).. I haven't even thought about this pc for a long time, getting a new one soon.. Anyway.

That's just normally.. Right now the new 80 gig isn't hooked up. I also cleared the CMOS earlier and reset stuff but as far as peripheral settings I'm not too sure on, I usually just adjust clock settings

And like I said I'm not very knowledgable on SATA, how it works, what it is, what makes it work, etc..
 
also this new SATA drive works, my friend put some files on it with his computer, had no issues at all.
 
Man this problem is driving me nuts, never had an issue like this before. Could it be driver issues or something? I mean the 36 gig SATA drive I've had is at least a year or so older than this new SATA drive, is it possible there's a conflict?
 
gonna need to try the bios flashing and also flashing your firmware first, if that doesnt work mess around with the bios settings for your SATA. If that doesnt work then you do not have enough juice.
