I'm trying to fix this box for my buddy. Its and HP Pavilion 7960. She drove it to my house and now everytime you boot up, it says bootdisk failure, insert system disk

I've reseted the BIOS, changed the hard drive from master to cable select.

Checked the cables

I don't know what else to do.

...so was the bootdisk in? If you could be any more vague, that'd be great, thanks.

If the Windows XP Restore Disk (or whatever was included with the computer) isn't working in the CD-ROM, then you can get on another computer and make a 3.5" diskette bootdisk. Check out http://www.bootdisk.com.

I'm not sure what you're doing besides resetting BIOS.
 
There's windows xp already on the machine. When its completly powered down and boots back up for the first time I get the msg. When I hit the restart button then it would boot to windows xp.

by saying resetting the BIOS i mean i Cleared it back to factory defaults using the jumpers.

I have formatted the drive and this is a fresh install also.
 
Run the drive manufacturer's diagnostics. You could have a hard drive that's headed south.....

id agree with BlindedByScience i had a hd die on me it kept doing the same EXACT thing for about 3 months then the hard drive finnaly craped out once i replaced it it was fine
