Boot Problems With SATA

For about a year I've been running a 36GB raptor (boot drive) and an 80GB barracuda (IDE) for storage. Yesterday I bought a 320GB barracuda (SATA) to replace the older one. I want to remove the 80GB barracuda for use elsewhere, but when I do so, windows refuses to boot. Is it not possible to run windows without an IDE drive? If not how do I get it to run with just the two SATA drives?
 
I am not sure why you would be having this problem, I have hot-swapped IDE drives in systems plenty w/o any windows problems. I run SATA only, and so not having an IDE is not the issue.

You may want to consider a fresh install?
 
What do you mean windows refuses to boot. What screen do you get to? Do you get an error message?
 
was the 80 IDE on its own controller? If it was the master and there is a slave it wont boot
 
Correct me if I am wrong but it shouldn't be an issue. His sata raptor was the os drive and sata doesn't use mater or slave.
 
hmm......this is a WEIRD one...
The raptor is the system drive....the ide drive WAS the storage drive, and the new 320gig SATA is now the storage drive right?
How does that cause an issue?
Did you try booting with just the raptor drive?
Do you have system files on your 80gig or something?
Im not sure how a problem could be arrising from this....try a different sata port.
Man, i dont get it....maybe lack of power?

I'm stumped as well.
 
Could it be that windows is trying to boot from the new sata drive instead of the ide. I was having a problem like that today installing a sata drive... I had a regular ide and a sata drive in my pc both with windows xp installed on them, and windows choosed to boot from the sata drive without even giving me the option of picking the ide drive. You might want to try putting the sata cable in the secondary slot instead of the primary and maybe it will boot. :D

See, it wouldnt be trying to boot form teh IDE in the first place though, because the IDE drive was NOT the boot drive, the SATA raptor was. So that doesnt make any sense....all i can think of is check the bootsetting in the bios again...
 
Boot settings in the BIOS are set for the raptor to be the boot drive, windows is only on the raptor, I formatted the 80GB a long time ago. Now something else I've noticed is that theres a Windows folder on the 80GB with nothing in it. If I delete it it's back again on reboot.

You sure you installed windows on ur raptor? :D Had to ask.
What do you mean if you delete the folder it's back again to reboot...i guess i dont understand that sentence. Did it boot with just the raptor plugged in?....if it wont boot with just the raptor, you can at least elliminate your big HD from being the problem.
