Boot problem

My friend's computer will not boot into Windows XP. After the windows logo screen, it reboots. If she tries in safe mode, it reboots as well. I booted into the command prompt, and when I did a "dir" on the boot partition, it gave me an error something like the following: Error processing recursive tree structure.

Any idea what the problem is? Or how to recover?

I'd say reformat but you probably know that. Try the automatic recovery?

When I ran the chkdsk utility, it would stop at 25% with an unrecoverable error.

Try going to new XP install, and when it asks you to choose to repair yours.
