Hey all,
I'm plannining on building up a new comp for my younger brother for christmas. I placed my old Abit AN8 motherboard into a new case, alongside the A64 3500 CPU and 1GB of Corsair memory that i used in it too. I bought him a mid range PCI-Express gfx card to go into the board also. The only things i needed to take from brothers old machine were his hard disks and DVD drive.
Upon turning the new machine on, i got the 1 beep signalling a normal post. The machine fires up fine, allowing entry into BIOS etc. However, just as the machine is about to load up the Windows XP logo, it resets. I've tried swapping IDE cables, placing them in different IDE channels, setting different master / slave combinations, all to no avail. I've tried unplugging his non-windows hard disc and dvd drive, so only the windows hard disc remains, and it still resets.
I've also taken all cards except the Gfx card, but the resets still occur. This led me to believe windows may have corrupted, although i couldn't see how. So, i tried to boot from the Windows XP CD, it copied the files, and just as the part comes where it says "Starting Windows Set Up" I get a blue screen with an Unmountable Boot Volume error.
I"ve messed with various BIOS settings, and tried clearing the CMOS using the m/board jumper. Also loading the BIOS Fail-Safe defaults.
I have tried a spare hard disc also, attempting to install a fresh windows, but the unmountable boot volume re-occurs. The only thing i can narrow this down to is damaged IDE controllers on the board, but they worked fine in my case 2 weeks ago, and wouldn't the drives pick up at all if the IDE controllers were damaged? The BIOS picks up all drives fine, the correct sizes and everything. It's just once Windows Logo should appear, it resets.
I'm clueless, and saddened that my brothers surprise comp upgrade hasn't worked out
