here's my situation:

i had 2 old ide harddrives and 1 new one. 1 was only 7gigs. another 80 gigs. and finally a 140gig SATA hd. i went out and bought another 250 SATA. i take out the 7gig. also yank out the 80gig and move it physically to another slot. i hook everything in.. first off.. windows would not start.. booted up normally and then says "boot from cd" and it hangs. so i decided to boot in windows and install windows to the new 250hd. i do that.. how ever i did not hook in the 80 gig hd because i have tried to put it in several different jumper settings. so i left it try later.. and now after windows is installed.. when i plug the 80 gig back in. it gives me the same message.. any help is appreciated. i have lots of backed up files in the 80 gig hd.. i thought of just shoving it into another computer. but i wonder why my computer wont take another HD.

here are my specs:

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2500 1.8ghz -> OC'd to 2.4ghz
DFI "LANPARTY NFII ULTRA B" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard
Thermalright SLK900-A Heatsink with Vantec Stealth 92mm
2x512 Corsair Extreme edition PC3200 DDR RAM so thus 1Gig of RAM
Memorex dual format DVD recorder
E-GeForce 6600GT GDDR3, 128MB Graphics card
 
Just a hunch (since this has happened to me) - the BIOS might be rearranging the HD priority order when you install the 80. Some motherboards default to the IDE drives first, if present. If you look at the BIOS and check out the boot device order, my guess is the SATA drive is not showing up in the list.

There should be a setting in there to change the hard drive order so that the SATA 250 comes first in line, followed by the 80 GB.
 
What's your exact boot order in the BIOS?

Is the 80gig an IDE drive? Is it on the Primary/Secondary channel and is it Master/Slave. And you're wanting to boot your OS off the 250gb correct? And it boots fine without the 80gb but won't with it in?
 
There's also one other potential source of conflict I came across - I believe that motherboard cannot coexist with a SATA drive and a drive on the primary master IDE spot.

the 80 is an ide.. i wanted to boot from the old sata (140).. the SATA drives boot fine without the 80gig IDE

i looked at the bios.. its tryin to load HDD-0 after CDROM

well... i had the 7gig as the primary.. WINXP was installed in the 140gig SATA which was already in there.
 
Set the SATA that the 140 is connected to as the first disk in your hard disk boot priority.

well to my knowledge the first boot device is the SATA. then it asks which other ones EG- HDD-0, etc...
