boot drive cant be read in an external casing ?

basically i need to get some stuff on my XP boot drive...but if put in an external drive casing and connect via USB...i jsut get a BING BONG then after a while says Could not install....tried with a non boot HDD and it works fine...

any ideas ? the HDD works fine in IDE though...
 
Try playing around with the jumpers on the drive.
Some IDE to USB bridges want the drive configured as Master, some as Slave, and some want no jumpers on the drive at all.

Whether the drive is a boot drive or not shouldn't matter.
