Afternoon fellow H'ers

I currently have a Linksys G router for my wireless network. Now what im looking at doing is boosting its signal radius by about 3-5 blocks. Anybody know of any device out there that would be able to do this or a homebrew method that would work?

THANKS IN ADVANCE! And happy St. Particks day

Woah..You want to cover that much area with just a standard Linksys Router?

A full radius, probobly not. If you got a nice Yagi Ant. you might be able to do it. The drawback is it is directional, not omni.

There are a couple different types of antennas..So generally you can get eaither an Omni (Which broadcasts 360*), Yagi (Directional, small coverage area but concentrated to cover more distance), and sectional (Which broadcasts in sections).

You could get seamless wireless over 3-4 blocks, if you used a couple routers and what not. One router for that much area is going to be dicey.

Bottom line, you need to get some altitutude. Get a 15dB omni and put it on top your house for starters, see how far it goes. If trees are an issue, it gets expensive quick.

its not likely to happen with a single wireless access point.

edit: 3-5 blocks all around or in a particualar direction?

This might seem silly, but wouldn't the wireless card have to be just as powerful to send the signal back 3-5 blocks?

If you have a high enough gain antenna on the other side, you can get tremendous range with a standard wireless card. A 15dB antenna adds 15dB to the access points sending and receiving. To get really good range, you need a high gain antenna on both ends, but one high gain will help a good bit.
