Greetings all!

I'm thinking of upgrading my computer audio to some (entry level) bookshelf speakers and I'd like to get some advice on what I need to set up a pair. I'm a total noob when it comes to audiophile stuff so any help will be greatly appreciated.

If I were to snag a pair of Polk M30's, what would I need to hook those up to my computer? I'd need one of those little amp thingies? (told you I was a noob ;) )

And what do I need to look for when shopping for those? So far as I understand if I want to be able to also plug headphones into the amp it needs to include a headphone amp... but what else do I look for?

Any advice on a relatively cheap amp for the M30's? I don't need anything too fancy.

Thanks in advance [H]... you all rock.

1. Why are you only considering the Polk M30?
2. Consider used bookshelf speakers, there are a lot of good deals to be had.
3. I would get a used entry-level home theater receiver with at least 1 optical and 1 coaxial input.

$50 for a receiver
$50-75 for speakers should be enough

Use lamp cord for speaker wire. Cheap and effective.

Well, the M30's cause I've heard they're pretty good sound quality for bucks... I'm open to any suggestions as I really don't know a whole lot of speaker brands.

Size is also somewhat of a factor... I need speakers that can fit on a fairly large desk. So some of the larger size bookshelves are out of the question.

Edit: Noticed a couple of Acoustic Research TSW 210 B for sale locally... any one know anything about these speakers?

I agree with 450, find a quality used receiver and a set of good used speakers.
There are so many great speakers from the 80s and 90s that get overlooked because they aren't new. They can sound just as good or better than the new stuff.
Just keep an eye out for ones that may need refoaming of the surrounds or tweeters that need service due to being cooled by ferrofluid.

Lamp wire will work just fine, I see people spend hundreds on cables but if you were to look inside their speakers or amp/reciever/etc you will see thin wires that may not even be copper.

To the OP, those Acoustic Research speakers look nice, How much are they going for, they could be worth picking up if they are cheap enough.
I've seen some selling for $100-120 on audio forums.

i chose polk speakers (cause they where readily available and inexpensive)

i have Polk Monitor 50s , CS1, M30 (surrounds) and PSW10 for our HomeTheater with a Pioneer VSX-519V-K reciever

and I have a SMSL SA-S3 T-Amp and Polk T15 speakers for my computer.

I'm very pleased with them sound quality is great price was great (waited for sales).. so i had to be a bit patient to get the prices below.

M50 $80 ea
CS1 $59
PSW10 $99
M30 $69 (pair)
T15 $49 (pair)

I'm sure if you know what your are doing and what to look for used speakers could be a good option but if i'm honest i had no idea what to look for and how to tell if the used gear was actually in good enough shape.

I'm sure there are better speakers in the world but since I got basically all the speakers i needed for the house for under $450 (before tax ~$436) I couldn't be more pleased.

and specifically to the OP I like the M30s a lot, they are rather large bookshelf speakers so make sure you have room for them

I'm glad to have new speakers with a warranty should anything go wrong...

I think Polk are great speakers, I just think one of the reasons so many people on here buy them is because they are always on sale at newegg. :p

You can get the Pioneer 8XX series reciever for 190 right now on the egg.

I will vouch for the level of respect for the PA speakers. As for entry they are very good, very worth the sale-price, just don't buy them for normal price or you start getting into the higher end book shelve speakers, which are much better IMO.

heres the Pioneer reciever:

ends tonight, so hurry up! I got free shipping too.

@ballistic:

The TSW210's are going for 60$ for the pair - sounds like a pretty good deal if you've seen them around for 100+

I imagine they aren't magnetically sealed, being an old pair of speakers, right?

I've heard a ton of good things about that energy set, gives the Klipsch HD500 set a run for its money (and its much cheaper). They decided to take the Pioneers off of sale today.
