Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone uses BOINC and/or if there was a hardforum BOINC team?

The website is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ , and I thought it was kinda cool because you can easily split your computer time between a few projects, like rosetta and climatechange research.

Anyway, just wondering.

[H] sponsors only 2 projects officially United Devices and Folding@Home, there is no official [H] team in any other project.

the only official teams are ud and F@H

we are welcome to talk about and run what we want but the only "officialy sanctioned" teams are fah team 33 and ud team something:)(don't know never ran ud)

What defines official support? Front page pimpage and anything else?

King is most certainly the most versed in the history, so take this with a grain of salt, but according to the History pages on HF.com, UD and F@H (formerly G@H) were the projects that Kyle gave his blessing to, hence their status as the "Official" team projects.

From various posts, it seems their are teams for the [H] in some other projects, but as for their official standing, they have none.

In other words this team was formed to conduct Medical based research, we don't crack encryptions, we don't hunt little green men..etc..etc..etc.

Originally we focused just on Folding@Home and Genome@Home, when the Genome@Home ship sunk Kyle authorized United Devices to take it's place, he stated at that point that until those 2 projects completed that was going to be our focus, no more projects would be added.

Un-Official means no front page coverage, no use of anything [H](it's trademarked and belongs to Kyle) no stickies, no guides, no help from Kyle..etc, nothing on [H]ard|Folding, no stats, no milestones, no badges, no trades, no registration, no help recruiting for the team on the forums..etc..etc..etc

It would be entirely un-official in every way, shape, and form.

I just knew you'd show up to right the ship! :p

Thanks for the final word King.

hehe, realized I had an FAH account still from earlier this year and downloaded the client for my laptop.

It just seems that anytime, anyone mentions a different DC project, the door gets slammed in their face harshly.

No official support per King's definition, cool. But to me, it just seems wrong that other projects get banished from here w/o any objective discussion of the project.

No stickies, "Which DC project is right for you" always seems like a good one to me.

It just leaves a poor taste in my mouth seeing every other project basically black listed before any discussion regarding the elements of the project are discussed.

Besides, it's not like anyone really pays attention to the projects anyways.... :p Anyone else notice [H] is outproducing OCAU finally.

The fact is Marty that once a year there used to be discussion about supporting other projects. Every one of those discussions ended up in a nightmare of hate and verbal battles, abuse and people quitting.

The end result of the entire conflagration was, if we spread our total resources too thin we would accomplish no single goal in any area and we as a team would not be contributing enough to each of the different projects to be of real use. That was a fact that probably 98% of the members of the [H] team could agree on and as such things are now where they are.

No one is forcing anyone to Fold or UD. You and or anyone else can work whatever project you like. I myself am here by choice, I chose my project and I peruse that project to the best of my ability and I choose do it under the flag of the [H].

If you or anyone else feels that you must or wish to support a different project that is entirely your decision, however as King pointed out this team supports two projects under the auspices of Kyle and the [H] banner.

We have a hard enough time recruiting new members who will stick to it as it is, adding more projects will simply complicate that process and take precious resources from what we already have.

Many times people stop by and suggest new and different projects and it is nice to be aware of them. King made a statement of fact, I didn’t read it as harsh or slamming a door on anyone, it was just a simple statement of the facts.

Thanks for listening

My thoughts are not based on anything specific to this thread (Bill's reference to Kings post in this thread), it's just anytime a different projects is posted the overall general tone is the same to me, negative.

I think I can believe that one, since any discussion of hf.com and alike always end up in a locked mess.

I dont fully follow the spreading resources too thin by covering other DC projects. In my mind, a clock cycle for a given project accomplishes something. If one looks at the overall contribution to FaH for example I think [H] is around 3% or less (Statsman is offline, I don't know of another stats site which breaks down overall % including default team). Not trying to down play all the hard work done here, just showing the truly large scale of this given DC project. (<1% on UD, my math might be way off here).

However, keeping up all the install guilds and the rest for various DC programs would be a mess.

Again, based on many different threads regarding different DC programs, it just seems they all get the cold shoulder right off the bat around here. Somebody someday had to have found FaH and UD and made a thread about it sometime here in the past, right?

Short version, some of the deep history is really ugly ;)

By way of some history, the original people who started all this were/are King, relic, CIWS, Gaiden, Kvizbar, nevo and an awful lot of people who are no longer here for various reasons.

It was sort of an unofficial [H] team dedicated to the F@H and G@H teams. They got Kyle involved when they as a group actually took over the number one spot in Folding and Kyle provided the web space, forum space, front-page pimpage and even had a bunch of machines folding under his name.

Over a period of time many projects were tried but in the end and after some “official voting” by the whole team the Folding and the Genome projects were chosen because by far they are the most successful and were and are actually producing useful results.

At one point Stanford did a really stupid thing with the points, which angered many of our team and many others, and people quit and moved on, but the main body stayed and now two projects were chosen as the official projects.

It took a while but the teams were built back up again and things now stand where they are today.

When someone comes to us (the team, forum etc) with a new idea for a project I really don’t know how anyone can say in a very polite way, thanks but no thanks, we already have all we can handle; our collective plates are full so to speak.
I fully realize the [H] represents only a fraction of the total project(s), but we are number two and have been number one several times and I was under the impression most if not all of us want to get that number one spot back.
I guess what none of us want (at least I don’t) is a discussion that will only lead to the “thanks but no thanks” answer, thus causing hard feelings.
If you can come up with a better solution I’m sure everyone is all ears, my goal is simply to avoid more bad blood then has already been spilled over what is supposed to be a wonderful project to help humanity.
Again, thanks for listening.

Well, think in terms of the researchers. If there are say 100 DC projects competing for CPU cycles, with 10,000 chunks to acheive before they've got their results, then if the CPU cycles are spread out evenly, it takes forever before any researcher gets to their goal of all the chunks completed. If the CPUs are more concentrated on certain projects, those projects can accomplish their goals faster.

I know this is an oversimplification. I think the point is still valid. More projects = less work accomplished for each = slower accomplishment. These projects can't necessarily share results; they're testing different things different ways.

I just wanted to point out that we have not always slammed the door on every project...

I think I still have a machine somewhere running Find-a-Drug. :)
