hey all... i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about when BOINC was going to be finally released, not as a beta? right now, as you can see in my sig i'm running SETI@home on everything i can get my hands on. (no, i don't expect anyone to join up: not here at least :p) I love seti, but i want to do something else for a little while maybe. the problem is that i have roughly eleven thosand units and eighty thosand hours invested in setiathome already, so i don't want to switch untill the project expires, and moves on to the BOINC framework. if i'm not mistaken you can run F@H on BOINC, so i would probably do that. i just wanted to hear your guy's thoughts on this, and if anyone knew anything about the release of BOINC and when Seti@home is going to finally cease it's propritary client. thanks.
 
You're probably the only one here who's heard of BOINC. ;)

hehe, somehow i wouldn't have expected that in this forum, even considering the few (2) posts that came up when i searched for BOINC :D

hah, so i guess i'll just have to sit this one out for a while. i downloaded the windows beta test a year or so ago, but the only available DC projects you could crunch on it were searching for black holes, and searching for aliens. neither was for credit, or much potential good, so needless to say, that got uninstalled after a few weeks. last time i read their site, it sounded pretty advanced. apparently it allows for much tweaking: diff. profiles for diff. computing environments, so it could ramp down proscessing when running on battery, or stop alltogether at a predetermined batt. percentage. it looked like it was the idea platform for me to run F@H or S@H. i especially liked the fact that you could switch as often as you liked between whatever project you wanted, and all the credit was common between all supported DC projects. sorry. i guess you guys could read the website and get the same info. so maybe i'll shaddap now ; ) anyway, if anyone knows anything, give us a shout...

i've just taken a look at the BOINC website, as i was a bit lazy before i made this thread, and didn't do my homework well enough :rolleyes:. it seems that the program didn't have as many features as i remembered it having a year ago. so i just didn't want ot lead anyone wrong... but don't take it from me: check out http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ for the BOINC project's home page. happy DCing!

I'd heard of it, just didn't have any idea whatsoever of the state of it. It sounds interseting in theory for peeps who want to run multiple projects but otherwise it sounds like an extra layer of resource stealing worthlessness as far as fah goes, especially since fah ver. 5 includes a service installer. :eek:

We don't spend a lot of time on SETI here. We've focused on other projects. But feel free to enlighten us about BOINC. I noticed that it includes climate prediction, something a few of us has expressed an interest in.
 
BOINC can run multiple projects at once, it was made by the people at berkeley(the same that made Seti@home), but it is made so almost any distributed computing project can be ported over to it. It allows you to specify the percent of cpu power that goes to each project.
 
Wonder what's taken them so long to bring it out? Can't be all that complicated can it? :confused: MS can bring out a new version of Office and two service packs in the time it's taken them to work on this. ;) At least it seems that way, I first heard about it quite awhile ago.
 
But notice how OfficeXP has caught a severe case of bloatware, takes a few gigabytes to install and runs slower than ever. ;)
 
Yeah, it's always been bloatware. At least it's not vaporware though. :D Although we'd probably all be better off if it was.......... :)

It's mostly students etc working on it...they do have other priorities going on at Berkley.

I lesf S@H to join D2OL...Seti servers were always crapping, the support for it seems to have gone to shit with BOINC as the main focus...instead of WU's BOINC will use cobblestones or some shit like that. Boinc will do a system scan to see what your packing under the hood and then give appropriate WU's for that machine, so you could potentially skew your rating, just underclock the snot out of your machine, install BOINC it will figure you've got a slow machine, run it, get your WU's, then overclock the hell out of your machine...unless they figured a way to determine this???

thanks for all the replys. i guess i'm just hesitant to move from S@H right now... not that i would argue that it has more of a potential for good then say, F@H.

pageian: i would agree that it's a waste of resources :D, my only arguement to that would be that it allows for other features as well, such as automatic work unit (sorry, that's a S@H term, but you get my drift) caching, which i think is quite a benifit. I know that they have a command-line version, and if i got into BOINC, i'm sure i would only use the GUI for a while only to get familiar with the way the program works.

but don't worry, i'll be looking long and hard at F@H too, when i'm ready to move on!

That's probably to be expected if you've been doing SETI for a while.
Part of any DC project is the fun and cameraderie. You get attached to your project and teammates.

and that's the thing i like about you guys. team? that's here. if anything has convinced me that there's a real purpose to DCing, it's been browsing this sub-forum. it's nice in here, and i have a feeling i'll be spending more and more time (and CPU cycles) with y'all.
okay, i'm done. but yeah, i just wanted to say that. :D
 
Are you sure you know what you're getting into? You'll be ridiculed, embarrassed, degraded, taken for granted, completely and totally used and probably left for dead on the side of the road somewhere. But that's only if you let Moose know where you live. :D
