BOINC / CUDA Issue

I just upgraded to a 5850 from a 9600gt a few days ago, and tonight I thought to myself... "Hmm maybe I should un-retire my 9600gt for PhysX and DC stuff"....since I have a second 16x slot (4x electrically).

Anyway, long story short, BOINC doesn't recognize my nvidia card. Apon further investigation it seems CUDA isn't enabled for some reason.

As you can see I have the latest drivers, but niether CUDA nor PhysX is enabled. I have tried the previous version of the drivers, as well as reinstalling the latest ones.

Am I missing something obvious?

humm maybe nvidia locking up the card even more now when detecting a ati card as primary ?

Well it would be the GPU manufacture's version of a three year old throwing a tantrum.

Sounds about rite for NV.
 
Did you recently re-install or update BOINC? If so, make sure the middle box (To run as a service) is not checked during setup. If you check that box, it will de-activate the use of CUDA in Vista/7 boxes. I'm not sure if it affects XP systems.

In BIOS, I switched to using the 2nd PCI-E slot as the initial display device - the slot the nVidia occupies. This changed the enumeration in XP (verified by checking the Display list under Control Panel > Display on the Settings tab).

I ran CUDA-Z and it found the nVidia GeForce 8600GT.

BOINC didn't automatically see a CUDA device. I re-installed BOINC, selecting the repair option and now it sees and uses the CUDA. Woohoo!

I can still use Windows with the ATI display adapter and the nVidia card is functioning as a co-processor board.

The only downside is during POST I cannot see any messages without a moving my monitor cable to the nVidia card. I can live with that.

If PhysX was enabled and you had an 5850 installed then that would let you have a cheap gaming card installed and use PhysX AT THE SAME TIME. Oh no, we can't have that that would allow most gamers to use PhysX says Nvidia so they screw around with the drivers and make you buy a gtx 470. You have to get hacked drivers to allow PhysX with ATI hardware but I'm not sure if they also enable CUDA. Good luck.

Notice now that OpenCL and PhysX are now enabled. I applied the patch/hack to allow PhysX with an ATI card found here.

Still no CUDA though...

I checked to see if BOINC was installed as a service, but it doesn't seem to be (Win7 Pro 64-bit anyway).
 
I would do a quick re-install of BOINC to be sure. I accidentally did it once. But, I really think it is just the ATI card being listed as the primary. Try switching it in the BIOS and see what happens.
 
OK Update:

This is weird but it appears to be working. BOINC has detected the card and is crunching with it. The weird thing is that GPU-Z still doesn't show CUDA as being enabled (BOINC does though), and on the sensors tab of GPU-Z it doesn't show any GPU load, however the temperature does go up.

Very odd, but it appears to be working so I'm not too concerned.

thats because GPU-z is seeing it as the secondary card which by default in the program says cuda wont work but it does due to the hacked drivers.. woot woot..

Yes I did see that, but thank you for the heads up. It's looking like it's just a false positive though; Symantec being overly sensitive.

I was in panic mode when I first read that though heh heh

every hack has malware in it.. thats what hack is.. people started freaking over nothing.. its been this way for a long ass time.. even application cracks are considered malware because they modify the original file which is exactly what the nvidia physX hack does..
