It would seem that Boeing has started final assembly of its first 787 Dreamliner jet in Seattle. The company will conduct test flights this August before it begins shipping the new planes to airlines next year.

The plane is coming to life at Boeing's main US production facility near Seattle, Washington from parts first made as far away as Italy and Japan. The medium-sized 787 is Boeing's first all-new commercial plane in more than 10 years, and has so far attracted 568 orders from 44 airlines.

Hmmm I can't wait to fly in one of these :) Boeing is aiming at the right market IMO, people are tired of the cramp space that normal planes offer... rather make the plane more fuel efficient and reduce the number of seats, thus increasing space and increasing payload... smart move IMO.

Good for Boeing.. I hope they will continue to dominate the government subsidized mongrel that is Airbus.

I've always been partial to Boeing. Was anyone else super-addicted to the Aerobiz games?

Good for Boeing. It's nice to see a big shift in airline technology (going to carbon composites) that will hopefully bring on cheaper ticket prices and thus more customers...not to mention the better affordability of travel with the potential lower ticket prices.

Hope they sell a ton of them. The company I work for makes the titanium Boeing uses in them, and business is booming. After 9/11,we had a long rough period, now we're working overtime to meet the demand.

It's worth noting that as much as Boeing would like to see more seating space for everyone in the plane, the seating arrangement is up to the airline. Boeing "merely" provides the tube with engines :) Don't expect your legs to thank you any more for flying on one of these than any other airplane.

(Note that I don't want to detract from any of the other new features like bigger Windows, higher cabin pressure, etc, just the seating.).

Bigger windows are actually a trick. They make passengers think they have more room and/or are more comfortable, even though their seating area is still the same cramped size.

Same with the bins you make the inside feel "bigger" if the overhead bins fold up intot he cieling instead of mearly being "attached"

I still have the 777 aviator glasses when they premiered it...maybe I'll try and grab some 787 ones :D

What the shit?

Lau spent more than 40 million Hong Kong dollars (5.1 million US) on 20 personalized car license plates.

That's $255,000+ per license plate. How much jewelery and precious metal or whatever can you fit on a car license plate? Unless maybe they have built-in hand-removers for anyone trying to rip them off. :D

So is he a billionaire in US dollars or by Hong Kong money? ;)

awesome when will these go in service? :D and which airlines?

Most of the international routing domestic airline, and the national flag carriers of allied countries should probably be ordering the Boeing. I'd be willing to bet cash that the Japanese airlines will only be getting this/other Boeing products. Prolly Air China too (I think they operate(d) the most 747s).

European airlines will probably/naturally be/already have options on the new Airbus. Fucking subsidies.

did anyone else notice how as they continue to build these they expect to assemble one in a matter of 6 DAYS!?!?

thats just amazing for something of this scale!!

Indeed it is. Once they get everything on the line set up the way they want it for mass production the different parts of the plane are pretty much just plug and play, paint, test, done.

I work for the recently merged 5th largest carrier, and this is cool!

ScareBus has been beating Boeing by the numbers (take off weight, bad weather landing, fuel range). So this is good to see!

I'm curious how is boeing reducing the number of seats? I thought that was a configuration that airlines could adjust, and most probably will keep you in coffin like conditions.

Bet John Travolta's jealous.

I bet you he's going through his kid's piggy banks scrounging up change....

That makes no since, in fact it's a contradiction. The 787's name is the dream liner. The dream lifter is the 747LCF (large cargo freighter) which carries all the bits of the 787 from factories around the world to boeing's factory in seattle where final assembly takes place. A simple typo maybe?

Correct. The article miss worded the dream lifter, it is supposed to mean "Dream Liner". They did fix the article to say "Dream Liner" Instead of "Dream Lifter".

I have no idea how you can miss such a big typo.

That is Billions USD.

This is how much bling you can fit on a automobile: (yes, that is real diamonds, real fur).

I am aware that the airlines are up to the seat configuration, but the airplane designers can only threshold so many seats in a layout. (ex. you can't put 400 seats in a 737). The initial suggested reference layout would be more roomier and it would be up to the airline if they want to push in more seats. However, with this design, airlines COULD put in more seats, however, they don't need to, as they would not lose money as they would with a traditional non composite plane since the platform is lighter.

I was referring to the license plates. :)

He purchases them as gifts and stuff. They are custom plates that he buys from people when he sees one he likes. One of them as I recall was "1 LOVE YOU" which he paid nearly a million bucks for... probably a gift to somone he likes.

Must be nice to paddle like that in money.
