I'm thinking of buying a new board and processor and have been looking very hard at the fx-55, but the price tag would hurt especially since I want a new setup before a mod I'm watching is coming out and I think it'd be too late that I'd be able to afford an fx-55. after researching a bit on this site, I think I'd much rather an Opteron 170, but I'm not sure which board to pair it with. would an nForce 3 Ultra be enough?

I'm looking to pay under $700 canadian if possible, but I'm willing to push that up a bit.
 
Posts concerning new builds such as this would be better suited in General Hardware, where I am now moving you. ;)
 
170 is a fine choice, i made it myself.
I would look for nForce 4 maybe Asus or DFI.
I think MSI also has some more budget friendly boards.


I like the ASUS board i picked up, it is very well layed out, and supports everything i feel i could need in a computer MB at this point.It can be at for about $170 US...
If you look here on the forums you can find the opty for maybe $360-390
 
one thing i forgot to mention, I just bought an agp vid card last fall (I know, I know, should've gone pci-e but I had less money then and didn't expect to get more) so it'd have to be an agp board

Are there any to find?
 
I did the same thing last year, bought a 6800Ultra, and now i wanted a whole new system, but did not want to take a loss on that card. I sold it and now I got my SLI system.

Will be so much more worth it in the long run. If you buy a nice card now, you can add SLI later, or just move it over to another system if you upgrade. PCIe should be around for a long time now.
AGP is dead in my eyes.
 
so your advice is buy the processor and mobo now and save up for a pcie card?
 
Get what you can now, and buy the rest later.
You can pick up a 7800gt for like $280 now. That is one sweet card, and you can always buy another down the road.

Another option is to open a prefered account with newegg, then buy what you want now, because you will have 6 months with no payments.
 
well, I can't do newegg since I'm from canada. I'm wondering after that asus mobo and processor I could get any card for under 700 canadian total
 
Look for an opteron 165 or X2 3800+ i'm not sure where you buy from. Those are both nice dual core chips. The opteron will overlock much better though.

Then look for something based on the nForce 4 chipset. Whatever you like. I went with the Asus SLI Premium, and both of those together will be in your price range.
